Flexible modules – making up a module system

Automation cells are extremely different. As different as workpieces, manufacturing philosophies, logistics, transport containers, or cutting processes. Our machines are based on the needs and processes of the customer, to which we adapt
  • ur cell layout. Due to an intelligent and flexible module system our machines have
become variable enough to adapt the layout of the machines to the manufacturing, process and logistics philosophies of our customers. Since 1985.

Structure of the module systems

For the module systems workpiece handling, pallet handling and tool handling the market requirements have been defined for the relevant weight classes. In parallel to the weight classes, the module systems have been subdivided into the functionalities base frames, moving, gripping, workpiece magazines, auxiliary stations, electrical equipment and control system, and software. Within the functionalities there are various modules of different sizes depending on the task. Within the various sizes we also differentiate between designs. An example: The module linear gantry is avail- able in 5 sizes to cover the weight range from 1 to 500 kg. Within the sizes there are the designs “Basic” and “Crane loading”. 4 ProMotion Special Edition ProMotion Special Edition 5 Module system Software

Cost per part

Regardless of general conditions, batch sizes and manufacturing technologies there is one common objective in our focus: to reduce the cost of each individual workpiece. To this end, absolutely all cost factors have to be determined and
  • analysed. Apart from the time slices during which the machines
are occupied, the times of employees spent with the individual work sequences are relevant. Depending on whether small/big batches or new parts/repeat parts are manufactured, different time slices may be relevant. While setup times and the time for programming carry more weight in case of small batches, part change times and unit times will be more important in case
  • f series production.

The process chain

To reduce the cost per part at short notice and to raise further optimization potential in the long run, it is advisable to analyse the entire process chain. The elements EPR software, CAM software, MDE/MES software, tool manage ment, clamping devices, machines, automation, and the
  • perating
procedures shall be coordinated and
  • ptimized, to the end that all elements
cooperate in such a way that the employees can use very much of their time for value-adding activities , and the machines have low downtimes. Automation is a key component in reducing cost. How should automation be designed that has a major share in reducing cost? Not only at short notice, but mainly with a view to becoming a key component in supporting continuous improvement and implementing the long-term production philosophy. Gantry robots

Workpiece handling

Gantry robots are an efficient variant for the automation of machine tools. Access to the machine is maintained thanks to loading from the top. This is of particular importance for setup processes and monitoring
  • activities. By utilizing
the space above the machine, valuable hall space can be used for other activities. The linear axes facilitate
  • perating,
programming and training at the machine. Jib arm gantry PA 10 The jib arm gantry for loading and unloading of workpieces up to 10 kg to and from a turning lathe. To increase the capacity, the workpiece magazine WS-Uni is designed as L-shaped pallet conveyor (80 pallets in total). The workpieces are aligned radially at an aligning station upstream of loading. After machining they are cleaned in a blow off box. Jib arm gantry PA 15 Jib arm gantry with H-loader and telescopic arm (maximum workpiece weight 15 kg) for loading and unloading of four grinding machines (parallel operation). Single machine
  • peration and/or manual operation is possible
via area guards (loading hatches in the trip pans). The gripper distance at the gripper yoke can be adjusted via NC axis. The workpiece magazine used is the 6-chamber stacking cell Cellmaster 1200 x 800. Additionally, an aligning station with 3 NC axes is integrated.

SLIDE 12 12 ProMotion Special Edition Everything from one single source, namely from the house of Promot Automation. All components of the flexible system have been tried and tested, and we have developed them with a view to optimum
  • perability.
Important for you as
  • ur customer: The
software Promot Prosys, too, has been developed in our house and is also designed according to the modular principle.

Module system Palmaster RZ/RL – the flexible robot cell

The Palmaster RZ is a robot cell with a floor installed articulated-arm robot, designed for handling pallets
  • f up to 400kg. The cell can be configured into many
different variants and is also suitable for linking one or two machines, or can be expanded by a linear unit. The cell can be configured in various ways, and it is suit- able for connecting one or two machines. Due to a sophis- ticated guarding system one machine can be operated manually, while the second machine keeps working in the automatic mode. If higher flexibility is needed, different pallet dimensions can be used in the system, or the cell can be extended, in addition to pallet handling, by one change gripper for workpiece handling.

Our advisory service

The pronounced goal is to reduce the cost per part. Therefore, we scrutinize the entire process chain in detail together with our
  • customers. At the same time
we provide advice at workshops or simulations. On the basis of our experience we analyse your situation together with you, so we can afterwards offer you the best solution for your specific task.

Palmaster FFS – high-rack storage

Palmaster FFS creates magazine capacity, thus providing for the related autonomy by using the full height of the room. The pallets with the fixtures are stored in a fully automatic high-rack storage. The handling of the pallets is by means of a stacker crane storage and retrieval system for transport weights up to max. 2500kg. Palmaster RZ for two machines arranged at 180° Palmaster FFS + Toolmaster + Setupmaster A combination of pallets, tools and workpiece handling all on a single manufacturing cell. Palmaster RZ for two machines arranged at 90° Palmaster RZ with one machine

Palmaster SZ/SL – Swingarm loader

The Promot Swingarm loader is a linear movable, floor installed loading arm. It is available in versions with two different reaches and for transport handling weights up to 2500kg. The swingarm loader is an ideal solution for storage tasks up to 3 m rack heights (typically on 2
  • r 3 levels). As with all Promot Palmaster plant full
advantage can be taken of the easy expansion and variable layout design the versatile modular system brings. The linear movable swingarm loader is available in three weight classes and with two different reaches. Software family – Promot Prosys

Software is of very high importance in flexible manufacturing sytems. Together with the hardware and the control computer software Promot Prosys developed in our own house you get a state-of-the-art modular system. And all this without any additional interface. The base module Prosys Basic contains an extensive data base managing master data
  • f articles, operations, pallets and fixtures.
Extension modules for tool management, NC program management, simulation, machine data acquisition, etc., can be implemented immediately or also at a later date. With our software, too, we clearly focus on “cost per part”.

Tool handling

With Toolmaster, Promot Automation
  • ffers two
alternatives for tool handling. First, as a central tool
  • magazine. The tools
are distributed to the machine via a gantry robot. The second alternative is the extension of an existing tool magazine via articulated robot and round magazine. The tools are managed via the software modules from the product series Promot Prosys.
