 Academies, Faith Schools etc. - set their own Admissions

Criteria (SMRT = Faith criteria; BCCS/Trinity/CGS/JCA =

Random Allocation; Social/Medical)

at the school

 You must enter older sibling’s details on the application  Apply on time and be patient

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Local Authority’s Criteria

  • Children with EHCP in place – apply via SEN Team
  • 1. Children in Care / Previously in Care but immediately

after Adoption/Special Guardianship/Child Arrangements Order was issued.

  • 2. In-area Siblings – Brother, sister, half / step brother or sister, or a

child of parent/carer’s partner where the child for whom the place is sought is living in the same family unit at the same address as that sibling.

  • 3. In-area Geography – Home to school distance as the crow flies
  • 5. Out of area Siblings
  • 6. Out of area Geography

Consequences of using false address – home address is child’s permanent address where he/she spends the majority of their time. Evidence may be requested.

Case Study

 Jimmy lives at 22 Ridgeway Road  Parents check ‘My Neighbourhood’ and they

live in Bristol Metropolitan Academy’s ‘Area’

 Parent visits all the schools and does a lot of

research

 Lives very close to BMA but would prefer

Bristol Cathedral Choir because Mum works next door and best friend will be going there as has a sibling at the school

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Slide 18

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

Scenario 1

 “I really want Bristol Cathedral Choir School. I

feel is it the perfect school for Jimmy. I am going to put it down as my one and only preference so that the Council wouldn't offer me anything else”

 1st Pref – Bristol Cathedral Choir School  2nd Pref – None  3rd Pref – None

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Slide 19

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

Scenario 1 - Outcome

 Jimmy’s application is considered under BCCS

random allocation. A draw takes place and Jimmy’s name is drawn 897th. A place cannot be offered as the school only has 150 places.

 No other schools are listed as preferences.  At the end of the process Denisa looks at the

list of all those children yet to be offered a school, puts them on a map and offers them the nearest school with a place available which is 4km away.

SLIDE 21

Slide 21

Scenario 2

 “I really want Bristol Cathedral Choir School. I

feel it is the perfect school for Jimmy. I am going to put it down as my 1st preference. I realise that there is a strong possibility that I may not get it, so I will add Bristol Metropolitan as my 2nd preference.”

 1st Pref – Bristol Cathedral Choir School  2nd Pref – Bristol Metropolitan Academy  3rd Pref - None

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Slide 22

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

Scenario 2 - Outcome

 Jimmy’s application is considered under BCCS

random allocation. A draw takes place and Jimmy’s name is drawn 523rd. A place cannot be offered as the school only has 150 places.

 Jimmy qualifies for a place at BMA, the fact

that it is his 2nd preference makes no

  • difference. His 2nd preference ranks higher than

a 1st preference who lives further away.

 Jimmy can still go on a waiting list for BCCS or

appeal and the place at BMA will be saved while he waits.

SLIDE 24

Slide 24

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

What to do after 1st March

Log into the online system or wait for a letter in the post:

  • Accept the offer – we would expect child to start at this

school in September. School will be in touch with info about the

  • pen day, uniforms etc. Let us know if place is no longer

required.

  • Go on the waiting list(s) only – for up to 3 schools –
  • ffered place will be held unless we can offer a higher

preference or September comes

  • Appeal - automatically added on the waiting list(s) – offered

place will be held unless we can offer a higher preference, successful appeal or September comes

  • Change preference(s) – max. 3 schools – must be in

writing with child’s full name, DOB & clear order of new preferences, ask Admissions for schools with places

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Slide 25

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

Waiting list or Appeal?

 Very fair transparent process  Appeals worth a try as the Independent Appeal Panel can

consider any personal, social or medical circumstances (evidence needs to be submitted)

 Appeal forms available on our website – 1 per school &

must be returned to the address stated on the form

 Appeals take place in June/July or September  Waiting lists maintained by School Admissions until mid-

September – then handed over to schools (except Cotham & Redland Green)

 Child can go up as well as down the waiting list – position

can change daily

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Slide 26

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

Appeals

 Democratic Services - write to parents with date, time and place of

their appeal 10 school days before the hearing

 Inform Democratic Services ASAP if an interpreter is required as

this takes time to arrange and cannot be done on the day

 All evidence must be submitted at least 3 days before the hearing  If parents cannot attend - appeal can either be heard in absence or

rescheduled for the end of September

 Parents encouraged to attend - can bring a relative, friend or family

support worker for support

 Stage 1 – all appellants in one room listening to the school’s case –

why the school cannot accept any more children – up to 1 hour

 Stage 2 – parents present their cases to the Appeal Panel on

individual basis – reasons why they want their child to go to that particular school – 20-30 minutes

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Slide 27

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

What is the 2nd Round?

 End of April - we look at ‘Late’ applications (submitted

after 31st Oct’19) together with everyone who asked to be included on the waiting lists or made changes to their on- time applications

 Top up offers – places become available as some

children who were offered will decline due to going to Private schools, moving out of Bristol etc.

 Same oversubscription criteria as in the 1st Round  Early May – we only write to ‘late’ applicants & those we

can offer places to

 If parents won’t hear from us they automatically stay on

the waiting list(s) – we will be in touch if we can offer a place at a school up until mid-September

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Slide 28

Trading with Schools Brist stol School Admissio ssions s Team

What happens in September?

 Sometimes further places become available – if we can

  • ffer, we will be in touch

 We expect all the children to start at their offered

schools

 Every child has a place even if it’s not one of their 3

school preferences – referral offer – nearest school with a place available

 If child won’t start at a school:

 Education Welfare will get involved  Home Education – parents must register through

Education Welfare
