Positioning overview

• Because of the difference in specification, the magicolor

5550 and 5570 serve different markets

• Both printers will blossom in any type of office, but the

magicolor 5570 with its higher print speed and increased processing power will also find its way into advertising and design agencies, and other heavy-duty environments where high-quality yet fast output is essential

• The magicolor 5550, although not as extensively equipped

as the magicolor 5570, may be a very suitable alternative to the casual user, interested in general colour printing

• Both the magicolor 5550 and 5570

have three different print resolution settings

–ECONOMY

• In Economy mode, the magicolor 5550

and 5570 will save toner on images and graphics - but not on text. This means that savings up to 50% can be made on mixed print-outs, whilst the text on the print will still look vivid and sharp!

–HIGH-QUALITY

• High-quality mode is the 600*600*4-bit

contone resolution already known from the Emperon-driven magicolor 5450 and 7450.

–GLOSSY

• Achieve ultra-fine image quality for

photo print by controlling the amount of toner adherence up to 250%.

– The magicolor 5550/5570 is the only printer in its segment to offer 600 x 600 x 4-bit Photo ARTTM contone. HP offers ImageREt 3600 technology on its clj4700 and clj4005, and Xerox has 1200 x 1200 dpi on its Phaser 6300, but neither of these is nearly as good as 600 x 600 x 4-bit contone

• Emulations

– The magicolor 5550 and 5570 offer the widest variety of emulations, including PS3, PCL6 and PDF 1.5

Objection handling

• What is the difference between 600 x 600 x 4-bit contone and

HP’s ImageREt technology?

– Essentially, the two technologies are not very different. Both employ the concept of varying dot size and printing different dots on top of each other. But, the term “ImageREt 3600” implies that the printer can print like a 4800 dpi-class printer*, whereas “600 x 600 x 4-bit contone” represents a theoretical 9600 dpi-class resolution.

• Why is the standard output capacity lower than competiors?

– At 250 pages, the output bin of the magicolor 5550 and 5570 is still more than adequate, but there is a large capacity staple finisher available, should the customer require a higher output capacity. This not only increases the output capacity, but also sorts and staples documents if required.

Emperon 4

• Several new features have been integrated into the new version of

Emperon, which is implemented on both magicolor 5550 and 5570, most notably

– New type of ASIC – Direct Printing from USB memory stick – PCL XL 3.0

• Allows using different halftone settings for vector or raster graphics, text. Supports

adaptive halftoning

• Supports PCL passthrough, allowing PCL 5 features to be used by PCL 6
• streams. However, some PCL 6 states are not preserved when using this feature
• Supports PCL fonts

Contone

• To generate photo-quality output with great detail and

character in fine lines and halftones, the magicolor 7450

• ffers 600 dpi (High Quality) resolution, also called 600 x 600

x 4-bit contone quality.

• Through a process called “Pulse width modulation”, the

printer is able to achieve very high levels of grayscale (color levels or shades).

• It produces four bits or 16 levels of gray per dot for sharper

prints and smoother gradients. In contrast, most printers produce one bit or two levels per dot.

Contone – the process

THE PROCESS On a 600 x 600 dpi printer, a laser beam can be “on” or “off”: 2 options, 600 times per inch. Subsequently, a printed dot can have only one size. By using Pulse Width Modulation, the “on” time of the laser beam, can be controlled. On a 600 x 600 x 4-bit printer, a laser beam can be “on” or “off” in up to 2^4 = 16 options, 600 times per inch. Subsequently, a printed dot can have 15 different sizes.

Contone – the result

THE RESULT Traditional 600 x 600 dpi needs many (i.e. 16) normal size pixels to „mix‟ one colour i.e. “light green” With contone, the same “light green” can be achieved with one single dot, by printing a small cyan dot on top of a larger yellow dot. This leaves the other 15 dots for more details. A traditional 600 x 600 dpi would need all 16 dots to „mix‟ the light green. Contone can produce the same light green in one dot, leaving the other 15 for smoother gradients. PERCEIVED BY THE HUMAN EYE AS LIGHT GREEN
