slide-11
SLIDE 11

Recalling Your children should be able to give you their revision cards. The revision cards should contain easily readable concise pieces of information OR a question on one side and the answer on the back. The card should have a subject and topic at the

  • top. Read them the topic title and ask them to tell

you all about it.

Parents CAN help!

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Recalling

Prompt them if they get stuck Work through all the cards Sort them into confident / not confident and give them back After further revision test the ‘not confident’ pile again This works for cards, mindmaps, mnemonics GCSEpod should be used IN ADDITION to traditional methods, not instead of them

How you can best support your child.

  • Encourage them to read at home (newspapers,
  • nline articles, magazines, fiction).
  • Read and discuss revision material and set texts

with your child.

  • Ask your child questions about the texts they are
  • studying. Encourage them to ‘teach’ you about

each text they have studied.

  • If the revision guides have been misplaced,

speak to the teacher urgently to request a new copy.

  • Check their planner for homework and

encourage them to show you what they have produced.

  • Start each day with a good breakfast and end

each day with a good night’s sleep.

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours.”

How to revise maths

  • The best way to revise maths is to do maths, making sure

that all questions are marked.

  • Start revising early and ensure ample time is given to

maths on the revision schedule.

  • Find a quiet space to work, remove distractions and

temptations to procrastinate.

  • Use the revision guide and workbook. Make sure you use

the answers in the back to mark your work.

  • Complete practice papers set by the teacher and use

feedback to focus of areas that need more work.

  • Use online resources.
  • If you don’t understand something google it. If you still

don’t understand then arrange to see the class teacher.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

www.sirjohntalbots.co.uk

On the day

  • Make sure you go to bed early and get a good nights

sleep the night before.

  • Have a shower and wake yourself up. Take your time

getting ready, don’t rush and get yourself worked up.

  • Have a drink and eat breakfast or attend maths

breakfast.

  • Have some key notes minimised onto one A4 sheet and

use this in the morning to look over key skills and formula.

  • Check you have all the equipment you need.
  • If using your own calculator ask a maths teacher to

double check it is in the correct mode.

The key to retaining information from memory is to practice retrieving it.

Rewriting revision notes over and over again will make students feel more confident but will they actually be able to recall it? Revision posters and mind maps are good but must be done properly. Writing a set of questions and an answer sheet to go with it. Revisit this a few days later to test recall. Flashcards for self-quizzing. Mix up the practice – do short bursts on each topic rather than spending longer periods of time on one topic.

Improving grades through parent partnership

  • Despite changes to GCSEs the key success factors

impacting on outcomes remain the same:

  • full attendance
  • Effective revision practices
  • good exam techniques

Parents can impact on the above. A DfE report suggested that 50% of the variation in test scores can be attributable to parental engagement.
