THE CATALOG

Everything you’ll need to do to graduate is listed in your catalog https://curriculum.sdsu.edu/curriculum-services/general- catalog Use this, and your degree evaluation, throughout your time at SDSU NB: a change to your primary major could change some of your graduation requirements

ALL ABOUT THE MAJOR

THE MAJOR

GRADUATING AS A POLISCI MAJOR

All graduation requirements are in the catalog & on your degree evaluation

▸ Pay attention to minimums & maximums, too, not just the

list of classes you’ll need

THE MAJOR

THE FOUR FIELDS

Our department has four fields: Theory (field I) American (field II) Comparative (field III) International (IR, field IV) NB: You can take courses in any order (e.g. field I doesn’t have to come before field II; 101 doesn’t have to come before 102)

THE MAJOR

PRE-MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

You’ll be a pre-major until:

▸ You complete four major prep classes (101, 102, 103 or

104, and 201), all with a C or better and your cumulative GPA is at least 2.4

▸ ▸ The move into the major happens automatically (no

paperwork needed)

THE MAJOR

UPPER-DIVISION REQUIREMENTS

1 class in each of the 4 fields 4 additional upper-division courses in any of the 4 fields

▸ ▸ You could do 1 from each, all 4 from one, any combination

you’d like!

▸ 1 capstone course

= 9 total upper-division courses

▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸ ▸

THE MAJOR

THE CAPSTONE

Three capstone options: An internship A senior thesis A capstone seminar (500-level) If you’re interested in a senior thesis or one of our internship programs in Sacramento or D.C., it’s good to plan early

  • 1. Cumulative GPA: An average based on all courses attempted at SDSU and transferable courses at other

universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. Your cumulative GPA can be found on your transcript or degree evaluation.

THINGS TO KNOW

THINGS TO KNOW

HOW ADVISING WORKS AT SDSU

▸ The main advising office: https://advising.sdsu.edu ▸ Graduation requirements, GE questions, etc. ▸ Your major advisor (me!): psadvice@sdsu.edu ▸ Anything related to the major ▸ If you have other majors / minors / certificates, contact those

advisors for questions: https://advising.sdsu.edu/advising/ seeing_an_adviser/major_adviser_directory

THINGS TO KNOW

ADDING MAJORS / MINORS

▸ Our major isn’t a huge one (13 classes), so many of our majors

will add a second major, a minor, and/or a certificate This isn’t required, of course! You could fill the space with various electives of interest, too

THINGS TO KNOW

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

▸ We have two certificate programs organized by polisci faculty

members, but you don’t need to be a major to complete them: Public law (contact Prof. Fletcher)

▸ ▸ https://politicalscience.sdsu.edu/undergraduate/

certificate.html

▸ Human rights (contact Prof. Cheng) ▸ https://humanrights.sdsu.edu/certificate/index.html

THINGS TO KNOW

DOUBLE-DIPPING COURSES

▸ “Double-dipping” means a course checks the box for more than

  • ne graduation requirement

You can double-dip major courses with GE requirements You can double-dip lower-division major prep classes with

  • ther majors / minors, if they’re required

You can’t double-dip upper-division major courses with any

  • ther major or minor

You can double-dip upper-division major courses with certificate requirements, with some restrictions

▸ ▸ ▸ ▸

THINGS TO KNOW

102 & THE INSTITUTIONS REQUIREMENT

Our 102 is required for all majors and meets half of the American institutions requirement (101 completes the other half) If you have credit for 102 from the AP exam or an out-of-state college, your credit checks the major box but not the institutions one Several of our upper-division courses will finish the CA piece

  • f the requirement & count as major courses

THINGS TO KNOW

THE WRITING REQUIREMENT

https://wpa.sdsu.edu If you need to take a W course, it doesn’t have to be our 390W (even though your degree evaluation says this)

THINGS TO KNOW

STUDY ABROAD

You aren’t required to study abroad as a polisci major, but if you want to, great! All plans should start with the study abroad office: https:// newscenter.sdsu.edu/student_affairs/isc/studyabroad.aspx ▸ You’ll only need to talk to the polisci advisor (me) if you want to take some major courses while abroad If you want to go for a semester (or a year), please start planning early!
