A few notes of welcome....

All are welcome! We’re glad to be together in God’s service today.

  • Ask a host/usher if you need help with anything.
  • Hearing assistance devices are available at the sound booth.
  • Our freewill offering supports the general operating budget or may be

designated for special projects.

  • All are invited to receive Jesus in the bread and wine of communion. There is

both a common cup and intinction available. If you do not wish to partake in communion today, we hope you will come forward for a blessing with your hands crossed/or folded.

  • If you wish, a prayer minister will pray with you during communion time.
  • Most songs are in the “ELW”- the red hymnal book—which you’ve been

handed as you entered today. The page numbers or hymn number are listed by the songs.

  • To help follow along and participate in worship today, there are arrows 

indicating when to stand as you are able.

  • Readings and responses are in light print and/or bold print. The assembly’s

parts are in bold face type.

  • The “Welcome” form is a place for everyone to share their presence in
  • worship. Let us know you were here and share any feedback/suggestions or

prayer requests. These forms are collected later in the service during the freewill Offering.

  • The Children’s “Pray-Ground” is a quiet space for toddlers/infants and

parents to sit together as a needed break from worship seats. We ask parents to sit and be present at all times with their children in this space. Thank you

Presentation of Our Lord

February 2, 2020 9:30 a.m.

+ Pointe of Grace Cross +

Connie Lewis designed the open cross to hold a cruciform that reflects the crucifixion of Good Friday. The top of the cross is open to remind us that Christ rose and the story didn’t end with his death. The Cruciform is placed in the wooden cross on Good Friday and removed before Easter morning. Other times of the year, there will be a dove in its center to remind us the Holy Spirit is always present and guiding us.

Words of Welcome Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. Amen. Gathered in God’s presence, let us confess our sin. (Silence is kept for reflection.) Mighty and loving God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of Christ. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Amen. Hear the voice of Jesus: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives.” In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. Amen. Gathering Hymn Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing ELW 807 The assembly turns to follow the cross as it processes through the

  • assembly. You may bow as the cross passes to reverence the mystery of Christ

with us.

We begin worship with the “Gathering.” A time of welcome, song, and greeting. It’s our way of turning towards God in worship, opening

  • ur hearts and ears to

hear the Word, and to prepare ourselves to partake in the Meal. Please turn to the center

  • f the sanctuary where

the baptismal font is located to start the Confession and Forgiveness. You may bow as a sign

  • f reverence as the cross

processes forward through the assembly.

Apostolic Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Almighty and ever-living God, your only-begotten Son was presented this day in the temple. May we be presented to you with clean and pure hearts by the same Jesus Christ, our great high priest, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated after the prayer. First Reading Malachi 3:1-4 A reading from the prophet Malachi

1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the

Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of

  • hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when

he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in

  • righteousness. 4Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to

the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. The reading concludes: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. Psalm 84

1How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts! 2My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord;

my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.

3Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest where she

may lay her young, by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my king and my God.

4Happy are they who dwell in your house!

They will always be praising you.

5Happy are the people whose strength is in you,

whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way.

This reading concludes a larger section (2:17—3:5) in which the prophet speaks of the coming of the God of justice. Malachi looks for that day when the wondrous power of God will purify the priestly descendants

the temple at Jerusalem. How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord. (Ps. 84:1)

6Those who go through the balsam valley will find it a

place of springs, for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.

7They will climb from height to height,

and the God of gods will be seen in Zion.

8Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;

give ear, O God of Jacob.

9Behold our defender, O God; and look upon the face of your anointed. 10For one day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

11For the Lord God is both sun and shield, bestowing grace and glory;

no good thing will the Lord withhold from those who walk with integrity.

12O Lord of hosts, happy are they who put their trust in you!

Second Reading Hebrews 2:14-18 A reading from the a letter to the Hebrews

14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, [Jesus] himself

likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abra-

  • ham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every

respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the ser- vice of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the peo-

  • ple. 18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to

help those who are being tested. The reading concludes: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation ELW page 151

Jesus shared human nature fully so that his death might be for all humans a liberation from slavery to death’s

  • power. Here the writer

uses the image of priestly service in the temple as a way of describing the life and saving death of the Lord

  • Jesus. He is the high

priest who offers his life

  • n behalf of his brothers

and sisters. The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel. Page 3

Gospel Luke 2:22-40 The gospel is announced: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

22When the time came for their purification according to the law of

Moses, [Mary and Joseph] brought [Jesus] up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), 24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” 25Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

29“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,

according to your word;

30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles

and for glory to your people Israel.” 33And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts

  • f many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe

  • f Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven

years after her marriage, 37then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 39When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. The gospel concludes: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Page 4 This story is a study in contrasts: the infant Jesus with the aged prophets; the joy of birth with the ominous words

  • f Simeon to Mary; the

faithful fulfilling of the law with the presentation of the one who will release its hold

  • ver us. Through it all,

we see the light of God’s salvation revealed to the world.

A Time for the Children

All children are invited to come forward, with their parents/guardians as desired, for a personal message on our scriptural readings of the day.

Sermon Anna Czarnik-Neimeyer Silence for reflection follows the sermon. Hymn of the Day In His Temple Now Behold Him ELW 417 Confession of Faith: Nicene Creed United as one holy catholic and apostolic church, let us confess our faith together; We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

  • f all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

  • f one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The assembly is seated. Please stand as you are able to sing the Hymn of the Day. The Nicene Creed, Was adopted in 325 CE, and established much of what is now known as

  • rthodox Christian

teaching on the subject

  • f God and the Trinity.

It remains the only statement of faith that is accepted by all major parts of the Christian faith. Page 5

Prayers of Intercession The assembly stands as able. Assembly response: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen. Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Offering What A Beautiful Name by Brooke Fraser (shared by Worship Team) Presentation of Gifts The assembly stands as able as the gifts are brought forward Offering Prayer God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures

  • forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine.

Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving ELW page 152 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

All are invited to greet

  • ne another with a sign
  • f Christ’s peace and

may say to each other, “Peace be with you.” An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. During this time, the table is set, and we prepare our hearts to receive Christ through song/music.) We offer our gifts for the service of God. Our gifts of time, talent, and treasure are used to proclaim God’s love in the world. Included in our gifts are the bread and wine, which will become the body and blood of Christ. Through these simple elements, God comes among us each time we share in this heavenly feast and reincorporates us into the Body of Christ. Page 6

Holy, Holy, Holy (page) ELW 153 Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets’ hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary’s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

By singing the Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy…”) we join the song of all

  • creation. We add our

voices with their song along with all the saints who have died before us and now sit around the throne of God. The presiding minister recounts God’s unconditional gift of love through Jesus Christ and the ministry given to all the world, of love and forgiveness, culminating in this meal and in this place we are rejoined into God’s saving work in the world. The Lord’s Table is

  • pen to ALL people

without exception. You do not have to be a Lutheran to commune here - this is Christ’s Table without barriers. Children are most certainly welcome. Christ invites each of us to join in this feast

  • f life and love.

  • light. Bring the gift of peace on earth.

Come, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. Amen. Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

  • n earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Invitation Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Come to the table of mercy and joy. Communion Instructions are given. Prayer Ministers are available in the back of the sanctuary. Communion The assembly is seated.

All are invited to pray the Lord’s prayer in the form and language which speaks to them. The bread is broken, and all are invited to the Lord’s Supper.
