AP & Dual Credit
►Dual Credit- receive college credit and

►AP test- get college credit IF they score
high enough on the exam. If they don’t take the test, they will receive 1.3 credit.
►Advantage of AP over Dual Credit is for
rank and rigor.
Dual Credit Courses and AP Courses
Rank vs. GPA
- Depends on where your student wants to go to school.
- Rank is more important to Texas Schools than other states. At
- ne time it was that any student in the top 10% of their class
would automatically be accepted…not the case anymore. A & M has changed to the top 8%, but that is not even for all majors.
- MOST scholarships give a GPA minimum and a certain ACT
score.
- ACT score is very important!
- The released ACT test is offered several times a year.
- Many times a student will have a higher GPA, but a lower
- Rank. This is because they may have taken all regular classes,
but made A’s, whereas, someone else may have taken all AP classes, but made some B’s. Typically the students that take the AP or higher weighted classes will make higher on their ACT.
Class Rank Computation
►Classes not included ►Explanation of course weights
- Reg. 1.0
Advanced 1.1 Honors 1.3 PreAP 1.3 AP 1.5
GPA
►An “A” is an “A” no matter if it is an AP,
Honors, or Regular class.
►No extra weight given to the class when
calculating GPA
College Release
►Seniors only ►Register on their own and bring a copy
- f their registration to the counseling
- ffice.
►Must take and pass TSI ►Cost $300 + ►Can take up to 2 per semester ►Course must be at least a 3 credit hour
class for it to count as an advanced measure

- Curriculum requirements for the
Foundation High School Program
- Curriculum requirements for at least
- ne endorsement
- 4 credits in math including Algebra II

New Schedule Change Procedures
Guidance and Counseling-Course Guide addition Every school year, counselors meet with students and parents, on both an individual and group basis, starting in January to review the list of requirements necessary to fulfill graduation plans and meet the student's’ individual academic needs. Counselors spend time with the students in the classroom, teaching the students about the Graduation Plans and courses available. Meetings for parents and students are set after school to help familiarize them with the graduation requirements, as well as, learn the Career Cruising online program available to each parent and student to choose their courses. Based on these selections made by parents and students, the master schedule is created to accommodate those selections with little conflict. Students will receive a schedule in the fall and will follow these schedules for the entire year. Schedule Changes: Schedule changes will be considered if a student was inappropriately placed, missing prerequisites, scheduling conflict or changing from an advanced to on-level class. A request can be made no later than the second Friday in June. Any changes must be made after schedule pickup and/or within the first 5 school days. Please follow the guidelines below:
- 1. Pick up a schedule change form in the Counseling Office (no emailing or texting changes)
- 2. Students must work out the new schedule, ie., what they would like to add and drop per
period
- 3. They must include a detailed description of why they would like the change (no changes per
teacher/student preference)
- 4. They need to fill out/change their Graduation Plan as necessary when making the schedule
change and turn it in along with their schedule change form
- 5. They must get a parent signature, teacher signature of the class they are requesting and
signature of the teacher they are dropping
- 6. Finally, they will need to get the form to their principal for approval and have them sign off
- n the change.
- 7. Return the form to your counselor’s box by the 5th school day of the start of the semester.
*After the first or fourth marking period, if a student fails an advanced course that marking period, he/she may drop to the on-level course(s), but must following the above procedure within the first 5 school days of the second or fifth marking period.*
