New Graduation Testing Requirements for the Class of 2019

THREE OPTIONS:

• 1. Earn 18 points on End-of-Course exams.
• 2. Earn a remediation free score on the ACT or SAT.
• 3. Earn 12 points in an approved industry-recognized

credential program and earn a workforce readiness score

OPTION 1: 18 points on End-of-Course Exams

Seven End-of-Course Exams: English 9 Algebra 1 American History English 10 Geometry American Government Biology (Integrated {Physical} Science test will not count for graduation points) Performance Level: Graduation Points: Advanced 5 Accelerated 4 Proficient 3 Basic 2 Limited 1

Each student must earn: at least 4 points in English tests at least 4 points in Math tests at least 6 points in Science and Social Studies tests Acceptable substitutes for state tests: Advanced Placement College Credit Plus test scores grades If a state assessment was not available, a student’s grade in the course will earn them the points toward graduation.

OPTION 2: Remediation Free College Readiness Score

Test will be given at school and will be FREE for juniors! Test scores can be used for college admission. Remediation free scores are: ACT SAT Reading 18 Critical Reading 450 Math 22 Math 520

OPTION 3: Certification in a skill and a passing score on WorkKeys

• English (4 credits)
• Mathematics (4 credits)

○ Must include Algebra 2 or equivalent

• Social Studies (3 credits)

• Science (3 credits)

○ Integrated Science (1 credit) ○ Biology (1 credit) ○ Additional Science (1 credit)

High School Diplomas

• Standard Diploma-student meets all

graduation requirements and meet one of three state testing options.

• Honors Diploma-a student who completes

the college preparatory curriculum shall meet 7 or 8 specified criteria.

Honor’s Diploma Criteria

• Earn 4 credits of English.
• Earn 4 credits of math including Alg. I, Alg. II, and Geometry or

higher math.

• Earn at least 4 credits of science including 1 credit of Physics

and 1 credit of Chemistry.

• Earn at least 4 credits of Social Studies.
• Earn 3 credits of one World/Foreign Language or 2 credits of

two World/Foreign Languages.

• Earn 1 credit in fine arts
• Maintain an overall grade point average of 3.5+ (unweighted)
• Earn a 27 on the ACT (or 1210 on SAT)

College and Career Readiness

Most colleges are looking for MORE than the minimum courses required for graduation.

• At least 4 credits of Science
• At least 4 credits of Social Studies
• At least 2 credits of a World Language (3+ for competitive

colleges)

• Additional courses to prepare you for the career and/or

college major you plan to study. The more exposure you have to high level academic courses, the better prepared you will be for success in college and in your career.

Pass/Fail Option

• Students may take up to 1 credit of elective courses in the

departments of technology, art, business, and/or music as pass fail each year. In addition, physical education may be taken as pass/fail.

• Courses taken as pass/fail will receive graduation credit and

will be counted towards eligibility.

• Pass/Fail forms are available in the counseling office and must

be signed by the teacher. The application must be submitted within the first four weeks of class.

• To receive credit for a pass/fail course, a student must earn at

least a D- or 60%.

• A student choosing the letter grade option (A, B, C, D, F)

must do so by the end of the course.

The College Credit Plus program (CCP) offers qualified high school students access to directly transcripted college credit. Students passing CCP classes will receive both high school and college credit for the course at no cost and without taking an exit exam. The student must meet the eligibility requirements set by the participating college for each course. (often specific ACT/SAT/COMPASS scores) The student must follow the college’s procedures and meet the college’s deadlines for enrollment.

College Credit Plus Classes

Students may enroll in college courses 1) at Pickerington High School Central 2) at local university or college campuses 3) online Classes may be taught by college faculty or Pickerington faculty with proper credentials. These courses are college courses and instructors follow the policies outlined by the college granting credit.

College Credit Plus Classes

Think about your future goals and plans when selecting courses. Challenge yourself! Check the prerequisites for all of the courses you select. Select alternate courses, in case there are conflicts or classes are cancelled. Read about each course in the Registration Guide online at: www.pickerington.k12.oh.us. Discuss your options with your parents and teachers.

Choosing the Right Math Course

Consult your current science teacher for advice. Everyone must complete: 1 credit of Integrated Science 1 credit of Biology 1 additional science credit Any additional science courses are considered to be advanced science

each course, and any required prerequisites. Chemistry and Physics are both Honors Diploma requirements. Students may take multiple science courses, as long as they meet the

Choosing Social Studies Courses

To fulfill the fine arts requirement for graduation, students must complete one credit in any of the following areas:

• Music
• Art
• Theatre
• Photography

Choosing Fine Arts Courses

Consult your current world/foreign language teacher for advice. Four-year colleges generally require 2 years

• f the same world/foreign language.

Competitive colleges sometimes require 3 years of a world/foreign language. The Honors Diploma requires 3 credits of one world/foreign language,

• r 2 credits of each of 2 world/foreign languages.

Students must show proficiency before moving to the next level of a world/foreign language. Please see the Course Registration Guide for descriptions of each course, and any required prerequisites.

Choosing a World/Foreign Language Course

1) Earn 0.50 PE credit:

• Must take 2 different PE classes
• Each class earns 0.25 credit
• May take one or both classes in summer school
• See the Course Registration Guide for course descriptions.

2) Earn two PE waivers plus 0.5 extra elective credit:

• Complete 2 seasons of OHSAA sanctioned athletics,

marching band, or cheerleading.

• Complete and submit 2 PE waiver forms.
• Earn a total of at least 4.5 elective credits.

Physical Education Options

Check each course for prerequisites! Consider your career and college plans. Consider what you enjoy. Consider class load. Always select the most challenging courses that you can handle. Provide alternate elective choices, in order of your preference.

Pickerington Central will have a new time schedule next year: Start time: 7:55 a.m. Dismissal time: 2:55 p.m.

• 26 modular schedule
• Each module is 15 minutes
• Most classes will be 3 modules
• Some classes will be 4 modules
• Class length is indicated on the course registration worksheet
• Students are encouraged to schedule 6 classes each semester
• Students must schedule at least 5 classes each semester
• Lunch will be 2 modules

Registration Process

The course registration window will close on March 11th. If you do not complete your online registration by March 11th and/or if you do not choose enough courses, your counselor will create your schedule and/or add classes. You will not be permitted to make changes to this request, except as allowed by Board Policy.. You will receive a verification of the courses you chose later this spring. Counselors must follow the district schedule change policy found on the Pickerington Central website at: http://www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/pickerington-central-high/courses- and-class-registration/ Remember, you will not be allowed to drop a class because you change your mind and are no longer interested in a course. Choose carefully!

Important Reminders

Next year will be an extremely important year as you prepare for college and/or your career. Make the most of it by: Selecting the most challenging courses in which you can succeed. Working hard to earn good grades. Getting involved (or staying involved) in school and/or community activities. Looking for opportunities to show leadership. Using summer break to visit colleges, gain work experience, contribute to the community, and learn about career options.
