  • Need for common prep times
  • Standards-based teaching in specials classes- equal time
  • Loss of school librarian position
  • Too much disruption in schedule for special events
  • Full time Kindergarten
slide-7
SLIDE 7

Physical Harmony

  • Physical Activity- supported by research
  • Unique and different activity
  • Positive large group activities for all
  • Builds social skills
  • Built in opportunities for special events
  • Opportunity for team teaching

Community Benefits

  • Outreach to local community through events such as Parade, Square

Dance, Grandparent Day, off-campus Performance Opportunities

  • Built in schedule allowing for large group gatherings such as

Assemblies, Walk-a-thon, Kids Heart Health Challenge, Program Practice, Mile Run

Jefferson Specials Schedule

45 Minute Prep times for all teachers 2 classes at each grade level would be simple: 1 to PE, 1 to Music Except...

  • There are 2 blended classes (4th/5th & 1st /2nd ).
  • Kindergarten has three teachers, all would like shared prep times
slide-10
SLIDE 10

Solving the schedule problem

All students in each grade come at the same time Blends either come with one of the grades or split for specials

slide-11
SLIDE 11

What Does It Look Like?

  • 30 Minute classes
  • 50 – 86 students in class at one time

– allows for shared prep times

  • Big Grid Setup
slide-12
SLIDE 12

  • Cool Water- End of Activity
  • We Go Together- Choose a

Partner Can be used in a classroom Setting as well

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Benefits of Physical Harmony

  • Teacher Collaboration time

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Other Considerations to Think About (Cons)

  • Staff Comfort and Training Level
  • EXCUSE ME! I have to do WHAT?!!!!
  • Start small – maybe a dance unit or just
  • ne grade level
  • We may consider trainings if interest

exists

  • Physical Time & Space
  • Lunch Schedule
  • Prep Schedule
  • Gym Size compared to amount of

students

slide-17
SLIDE 17

Other Considerations Continued…….

  • Large Group Management – 2 or more experienced teachers

Student/Staff/Parent Buy In

  • I HAVE TO DO WHAT??!!!!!

Is This Really Academic?

  • PE Standards – new for Oregon in 2016
  • 2nd Grade – PE 1.2.6 = Perform a teacher and/or student designed rhythmic

Activity with response to simple rhythms

  • 3rd Grade – PE 1.3.6 = Performs teacher-selected and developmentally

appropriate rhythmic activity movement patterns and steps.

  • 4th Grade – PE 1.4.5 = Combines locomotor movement patterns to create and

perform a rhythmic activity. Applies skill with cultural diversity in mind.

SLIDE 19

Is This Really Academic?

  • Music Standards –
  • Kindergarten MU.11.CO2.K- With guidance, demonstrate how a specific music

concept (such as beat or melodic direction) is used in music.

  • 3rd Grade MU.7.RE1.3- Demonstrate and describe how a response to music

can be informed by the structure, the use of the elements of music, and context (such as personal and social).

  • 5th Grade MU.4.PR1.5- Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the

elements of music (such as rhythm, pitch, form, and harmony) in music selected for performance.

What are some large group games? Let’s try these.

  • Ball Toss – Students try to put balls/beanbags into a basket /hula

hoop by standing on poly spots on the floor. If they make it they take the poly spot back to their group. Students could throw them underhand or overhand and from a different range depending on how

  • ld they are. Type of implement they are tossing may change depend
  • n age.
slide-21
SLIDE 21

What are some large group games? Let’s try these.

Shadow Dance– Students sit with a partner, decide who is partner #1 and partner #2 (tall/short?). During first part of song, partner one moves in place while partner two acts as a mirror or shadow, copying the motions. Switch leaders halfway through. Stay near spot, only feet on the ground, no touching.

Other large Group Activity Choices: Dances Relays Juggling Jump Roping Tinikling Parachute Limbo, or…?

Still More Benefits

  • Most of the things we do help in some way also in the classroom but

these we specifically do for Cross-Curricular Activities.

  • Spelling Relays – Find out words that a group is working on and put letters out

in a hula hoop. Have one student at a time come get a letter at a time and they need to spell the word out in front of their line.

  • Number Relays = Multiples of 3, 1-10 in order, or a sequence relay

(1,3,5,____ 9,11).

  • Snowball Math
  • Geography/Directions – North, South, East, West
slide-24
SLIDE 24

How could you adapt this to your school/district?

  • Could be a way to include both specials classes if you only have one
  • Team of teachers could work on school-wide events
  • Individual teachers could use it to break up the day
  • Teach as a shorter unit instead of all year long
  • Begin or end a PE or Music class with one PH activity
  • Or…?
