Designations
The Humber Estuary is internationally important for wildlife and is designated as:
- A Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
- A Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Habitats Regulations
- Internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention.
Together these designations form a Humber Estuary European Marine Site which is part of the Natura 2000 network of nature conservation sites designed to protect the most seriously threatened habotats and species. The Humber Management Scheme is a partnership which aims to deliver the sustainable management of the Humber Estuary EMS.

The role of Local Nature Partnerships
- LNPs work strategically and practically to help people
and organisations manage the natural environment in their local area
- LNPs work to ensure that:
the natural environment and its services are valued the vital contributions it makes to the well-being of all are understood and that these are taken into account in local decision-making (e.g. planning and economic development).
