• Increasing variety of protocols

and modalities

– Interpretation might even become hard for clinicians

• Everything is online

– Images in patient record and in articles

• Radiologists and other clinicians have same access

– Images and videos not perfectly integrated into search

• Tools for image and signal search are required

– Images and videos are clearer to interpret than lab values, people have more experience in this

Medicine and the web

• Many people are afraid to

have health data revealed

– Trust is important

• Information retrieval and also imaging have similar

tools for patients and clinicians

– New trends come from consumer informatics

• Different from 20 years ago

– Images and videos can be used to explain information to the patient (currently largely underused)

• Clinicians need to know the knowledge sources of

their patients

– There are risks and potential for empowered patients

Social media

• Exchange of data between friends is very liberal

– Also for the medical field? Exhibitionism?

• Use of visual data is very natural

– People know how to handle and use it

• People will get organized

whether we want it or not

– Social medical networks exist – Rare diseases – Blogs, … – Facebook for health

• There are risks and possibilities

Conclusions

• Linking of information and

knowledge sources will continue, semantic information will grow

– And this will fully include images, signals and videos

• New search tools need to take this into account

– Level of trust for the information – Level of technicity for results

• Different results for specialists, GPs and patients

– Full integration of multimedia

• I usually want to know more about my health status

– Clinicians needs to accept this request of inforamtion
