Rehabilitation

RAMON REYES-HERNANDEZ Ponce, Puerto Rico Ramón has lived most of his life in Ponce, in the home where he grew up with his parents and siblings. Late in his parent’s life, Ramón was the one who looked after them. Now at 72-years young, he does not have a family support system since all his siblings live abroad. His neighbors and childhood friends are all he has. One of those friends contacted PathStone with concerns about Ramón’s precarious living conditions. Hurricane Maria destroyed the roof of his home and most of his belongings, including the tools and parts he kept from years of working as a plumber. This good-hearted man not only needed help to repair his roof, but also to clean and sanitize his home. PathStone committed to helping him. Assistance and Services

Relocation

LUZ M. RESTO-AGOSTO Vega Alta, Puerto Rico Doña Luz, 82, raised her 4 children in the home that she lived in for over 60 years. Hurricane Maria destroyed her home and due to the deteriorating conditions of the property, FEMA assistance was minimal. The home was not reparable due to the weakness of the foundation and the poor quality of construction. After the hurricane, Luz suffered a minor stroke from which she is still recovering. The remote location of her old home was not appropriate for her age and health condition. PathStone recommended relocation, since Luz did not have title for the property. Luz and her family are very excited to have a safe and decent home for her for the years to come. Assistance and Services

Replacement

AIDA ALFONSO MANGUAL Ponce, Puerto Rico Aida Alfonso Mangual has shed more tears since Hurricane Maria struck the Island than in her prior 56 years of life. The tragedy of losing her home, where her 5 children grew up was only one of the emotional tests she has

  • faced. Her husband Francisco, a dialysis patient at the time of the Hurricane,

suffered several heart attacks after seeing that they lost everything they had worked so hard for all of their lives. Francisco’s greatest fear was that he would leave his wife—a pulmonary fibrosis patient—homeless. He was comforted to know that PathStone had started the process to provide a safe

  • home. But after six months of struggling, his heart gave up.

Aida sheltered with her daughter and longed to return home. But her home was totally destroyed—the wooden house that was her home no longer existed. After almost 17 months, Aida is smiling again; enjoying her new home and finally believing that there is still much to live for.
