  • Due to lack of systems that can detect, monitor and provide inputs on energy consumption pattern, state utilities face

huge aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses. This has resulted in energy theft and energy losses.

  • Poor billing efficiency affects cash inflows to the utilities.
  • JnJ smart metering system is capable of providing to Indian Utilities an effective Energy Metering, Billing, Monitoring &

Energy Loss Reduction Services.

  • JnJ’s Daily Automatic Energy Loss Measurement and Reporting of Feeder & Distribution Transformer ( LT side) losses

provides inputs to enable action for loss reduction. The PLCC communication system JnJ deploys on LV networks, helps in 100% indexing of LV consumers under each Distribution transformer enabling 100% correct Energy Audit and effectively helps loss reduction exercise.

  • JnJ Smart Prepaid Metering provides Utilities scope for highly improved cash flows. JnJ Builds, Owns & Operates

Advanced Metering Infrastructure and Prepaid Metering.

  • With Electricity Distribution companies struggling with such huge energy losses and cash flows difficulties, big
  • pportunities exist now to reach out to these Utilities with Smart Metering solutions that would help them reduce AT

&C losses and highly improved cash flows.

  • JnJ has its own end to end system. An integral part of this end to end communication

system is the MDAS-MDM.

  • JnJ has its own servers located in Hyderabad on which the MDM and MDAS applications

are run

  • Services to DISCOMs are provided via the web
  • A wide range of data from basic kWh readings to detailed alerts and events are collected

from the meter

  • The MDM also has a wide range of analytics that are being used in JnJ Pilots across the
  • DISCOMs. Analytics provide direction to the decision makers in the DISCOMs to make

more educated and therefore more precise decisions.

SLIDE 41
  • In the PLCC system the DCU uses the existing power-lines to communicate to the meters under it.

This eliminates the potential issues with loss of data and communication due to the very dynamic line

  • f sight issues.
  • The PLCC system also allows to identify meters that do not belong to the same DTR. This helps in

identifying issues with indexing.

  • Live Energy Audit: Daily energy loss reporting system allows for quick checking of the field issue in

case loss fluctuates.

  • Tamper Detection: All meter tampers, including those performed on live meters, are sent to the JnJ
  • MDM. The DISCOM can act upon the issue with the least amount of delay.

Advantages of the JnJ Metering System

slide-42
SLIDE 42
  • All critical information is sent to the JnJ MDM. This allows the DISCOM officials to act

upon such alerts.

  • Alerts are segregated into priority categories from critical to informative.
  • In case a meter on the field needs to be replaced, Meter replacement procedure must be

followed which includes replacement on the field as well as making corresponding changes on the MDM.

Contingencies

slide-43
SLIDE 43

Benefits of JnJ Smart Metering

slide-44
SLIDE 44
  • The project has been executed with good cooperation of AVVNL team and able guidance and support from USAID

PACE-D team.

  • The initial difficulties were faced while surveying and also while installation at homes of the consumers as some of

them were apprehensive about the new technology meters being installed.

  • The dynamic changes taking place in the distribution network post the survey and also at times after the initial

installations disturbs the consumer indexing – and in the process the energy auditing exercise. Obtaining timely information from the Discom helps in making suitable corrections in the back end system. Any disconnection /removal of meter, addition of new consumers under a DT, or shifting of load to other /from other DTs must be intimated to JnJ immediately to address the changes in the MDM.

  • We hope that proper analysis of the energy losses will help bring down the LT losses to a large extent in the coming

6 months of operations.

SLIDE 46
  • JnJ has deployed about 200 Smart Prepaid Meters for Railways for their tenants on the Railway

Station platforms.

  • The recharging is done through a fully remote system using JnJ Powercom’s technology.
  • The Business Model is that JnJ sells the Meters and also maintains the entire system through its own

central server facility based in Hyderabad on service charges per Meter per month basis.

  • Successfully running over the last one year with 100% service level – immediate recharge on

payments, hourly energy readings to the server, real time tamper alerts, etc.

  • This system is deployed for metering the tenants of SCR on the railway station platforms. There has

been a substantial increase in revenue due to smart metering and ease of collections due to the smart prepaid metering system. For example one tenant in Kachiguda railway station who was earlier paying less than INR 1,000 a month recharged almost INR 17000 in the first month itself.

  • JnJ expects to deploy its Smart Prepayment System in all Railway Stations, Bus Stations in the country to do tenant

metering.

  • JnJ has won the bid for 18,750 pieces of Smart Prepaid Meters from three Power Distribution

Companies in Orissa -value of about INR 340 Million.

  • The initial quantity of 4036 pieces is being installed in several Government establishments in the
  • state. The project implementation is fast progress.
  • In this , the Meters are in scattered deployment and so individual Meters have GPRS communication

direct to JnJ server.

  • JnJ is executing this order with a unique business model – BOOT ( Build, Own, Operate and Transfer).
  • JnJ has invested and would operate the total prepayment systems for 4 years and service contract

would be extended beyond 4 years.

  • With under 4,000 Smart Prepaid Meters installed, the Utilities are collecting regular prepay amounts
  • f nearly INR one crore a month whereas they were earlier receiving these payments at the most
  • nce in a year. The payback period projected by the DISCOM is about 14 months.
  • JnJ expects to deploy the entire quantity Prepaid Meters in Orissa over next 6-8 months. This project

is being scaled up to many more Government establishments several commercial and industrial consumers.

  • JnJ has won the bid for Pilot project about 205 pieces of Smart Prepaid Meters from Central Electricity Supply

Utility (CESU) Orissa.

  • Deployment of these Smart Prepaid Meters in Bhubaneswar & Cuttack which are chosen for Smart City

development by Govt of India. JnJ is the first to deploy smart Meters in this DISCOM.

  • This is an initial quantity as Pilot and the Utility plans deployment of larger number of Smart Prepaid Meters.
  • In this project , CESU intends large deployment and so requires to cluster/Mesh its Meters in a PLC Mesh that is

connected to one data concentrator per transformer. The DCU has GPRS communication/optical LAN direct to JnJ Server.

  • JnJ carried out successfully the LT Energy loss measurement & automatic daily reporting on one DT at Secretariat.

The loss which began at over twenty percent has been brought to as low as seven percent with the help of smart metering data available.

  • JnJ would operate the total Prepayment systems for 3 years and service contract would be extended beyond 3

years.

  • JnJ in consortium with Wipro Ltd (one of India’s largest IT Companies) has won this large and

prestigious Smart Grid Pilot project through tendering process.

  • This Smart Grid Pilot is being executed in Agartala city ( capital of Tripura State) which is

chosen by Govt of India for development into a Smart City.

  • This project involves 46,000 Smart Meters, MDM software and operations & maintenance for 5

years

  • The total value of the JnJ portion of the project is INR 400 Million
  • The first phase Meter installations were completed.
  • The project is progressing fast and expected to be completed by March 2017.
