Meaningful Insights

  • Near Real Time Exception Notifications

Example: “<Consumer Name> Low PF (0.65) @ Date/Time” “CHANDER PARKASH MULACHANDA, LOW_B_PF, (0.67) @ 2016-09-21 10:37:41”

  • Near Real Time Actionable Insights for AVVNL
  • Examples:

“204 number of consumers are having low power factor leading to higher line losses. Advise them to use automatic power factor controller.” “R_Current phase imbalance at DT

  • 3 of 35.32% is leading to higher T&D losses leading

to 1.6 kVAh. Please consider reconfiguring the phase sequence of consumers.” “202 number of consumers are exceeding their sanctioned load aggregating to 180.33 kW. Please consider load augmentation for such consumers.”

Upkeep of the System

  • Ensure that the probe is always attached to the data port of meter.
  • For any maintenance work on DTs, if CTs are removed, the same should be put

back with special care about its direction.

  • If for any reasons (like manual meter reading) the probe is removed, it should be

attached back to the port to ensure continuous data reads.

  • If for any reasons, the underlying meter is changed (different make, different

phase), then please intimate Radius with the new meter details (make, phase) so that requisite firmware can be pushed to the OTT Adaptor from the backend system to make it work with the new meter and accurate accounting.

  • If in general any changes are made to the distribution network (moving

consumer from one DT to the other, adding of new consumer connections to pilot DTs, etc.), then please intimate Radius so that the required mapping can be done at the backend for accurate accounting.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

16

Solution Advantages

  • Investment protection: No replacement of installed base of existing different

make meter as it is upgraded by OTT solution to make them functionally smart.

  • Faster implementation: OTT Adaptors added on communication ports of

existing meters.

  • Least consumer resistance: No meter change is required thereby the

consumer perception of new meter being fast is addressed.

  • Regulatory compliance: No new regulatory frame work required as the

existing CMRI port for collecting data is being used to read the meter

  • Heterogeneous Installation: Support for various makes and types (non-

smart, smart) of meters, resulting in a easily scalable and maintainable set-up eliminating vendor specific dependencies

slide-17
SLIDE 17

17

Solution Advantages

  • Investment protection for OTT module: OTT modules can be configured

remotely (OTA) to read different makes of meter. Bi-directional communication capabilities to interface with Smart Meters as well.

  • Integration with existing IT back-end of utility: OTT solution and its

back-end IT platform has web services and can be integrated with existing IT back-end of utility through API

  • T

echnologically advanced solution: Based on the concepts of IOT/M2M and distributed intelligence, resulting in near real time operations.

  • User Engagement/Empowerment: Feature rich and informative CEIP

(Consumer Engagement and Information Portal) for Utility and End Consumers. Additional mobile apps for end consumers.

Challenges

Preparedness and Cooperation on the part of Utility Any change / new initiative needs a new perspective and aligned mindset for success. With respect to Smart Grid pilot, following are some important points for increasing the probability for success and faster implementation:

  • Availability of utility assets and consumer related data for pilot area
  • An initial walk through from utility side to ensure all utility assets (example consumer

meters, DT and Feeder meters, meter communication ports etc.) are available and functional with respect to smart grid pilot needs.

  • Close communication between utility and implementation partners for regular sync

up on all important aspects, implementation plans and schedules.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

19

Challenges

  • Distribution Network Change Management
  • One of the most important aspect for successful operations of Smart Grid. Any automated

system can work within defined guidelines of process and information flow.

  • Merging of Distribution Transformers without intimation.
  • Pilot area consumers being reconnected to DT’s within or outside pilot scope without

intimation leading to inaccurate AT&CL reporting on dashboard.

  • Replacement of faulty meters without intimation leading to erroneous data.
  • Conversion of connection (from 1 phase to 3 phase)
  • Carefully doing repair work at DT’s with respect to the CT’s installed.
  • The above lead to a lot of rework as well as wrong recording and reporting of various

statistical parameters.

  • Can be controlled to a good extent by proper communication and planning between the

various stake-holders.

  • Inconsistent Meter Behavior
  • Observed that few meters get into a hang state, gives erratic data despite consumer consuming
  • energy. This leads to inconsistent T&D loss behavior.
slide-20
SLIDE 20

20

Additional Learnings from Past

  • Energy Meter RTC
  • Meters as of now are not time synchronized with respect to some common time server. Many meters have

large variations and some do not give proper time. This leads to faulty time stamps of meter data and subsequent analysis.

  • Being overcome by using time stamps from Radius hardware (time synchronized through GPS / Data landing

time at Device Connection Platform.

  • Private APN SIM based connectivity
  • This works out lot better in terms of security and reliability.
  • Eliminates any chances of data misuse as it is a point to point private network connectivity.
  • Expected to work in hostile conditions (riots etc.) when normal internet connectivity SIM’s are non-
  • perational.
  • BIG Data: Near real time and high frequency data gives great energy insight to tackle AT&CL.
  • Mobile App: Excellent tool in the hands of consumer for energy conservation, energy planning,

demand side management and reducing consumer grievances.
