Be Foolish to be Wise
1 Desire (to be wise)
Genesis 3:1-6
Be Foolish to be Wise | 1 Desire
1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals
the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5“For
God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil”.
Genesis 3:1-6
Be Foolish to be Wise | 1 Desire
6When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food
and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

- pened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig
leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he
was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

A Tale of Two Wisdoms
1 Corinthians 1:17-31
Be Foolish to be Wise | 2 Directions
17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—
not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
20Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law?
Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
1 Corinthians 1:17-31
Be Foolish to be Wise | 2 Directions
22Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach
Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

1 Corinthians 3:18-20
Be Foolish to be Wise | Conclusion
18Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the
standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s
- sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20and
again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”
