  1. OUR GREAT SUBSTITUTION: PART 2 Mark 15:16-43

  2. MAIN POINTS: 1. The Person of Jesus Christ 2. The Pain of Jesus Christ 3. The Plan of God

  3. 1. THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST

  4. Who is Jesus Christ?

  5. WHO IS JESUS? 1. Jesus is Eternal

  6. PSALM 90:1-2 Lord, You have been our refuge in every generation. Before the mountains were born,
before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God.

  7. MIKE RAMSDEN “When did the God who always existed, which means there was never a time that He didn't exist, when didn't he exist and have to be brought into existence?”

  8. • We experience life one moment at a time. • We experience life one location at a time. • We experience life with no knowledge of the future. • We experience life in a way that changes.

  9. WHO IS JESUS? 1. Jesus is Eternal 2. Jesus is Powerful

  10. JOB 42:1-2 Then Job answered the LORD and said, “I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

  11. HEBREWS 1:2-3 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command.

  12. WHO IS JESUS? 1. Jesus is Eternal 2. Jesus is Powerful 3. Jesus Became a Man

  13. JESUS BECAME A MAN: • Tired • Hungry • Spatially Located • Learned • Took a Shower • Beard

  14. 2. THE PAIN OF JESUS CHRIST

  15. MATTHEW 3:16-17 After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

  16. 2 SAMUEL 6:3-5 They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house, which was on a hill. Uzzah and Ahio, Abinadab’s sons, were guiding the cart that carried the Ark of God. Ahio walked in front of the Ark. David and all the people of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.

  17. 2 SAMUEL 6:6-7 But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God. Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this. So Uzzah died right there beside the Ark of God.

  18. 1 SAMUEL 5:9 But when the Ark arrived at Gath, the Lord’s heavy hand fell on its men, young and old; he struck them with a plague of tumors, and there was a great panic.

  19. 1 SAMUEL 5:9 He smote the men of the city, both small and great, and hemorrhoids broke out upon them.

  20. MARK 14:41-42 “The time has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up; let’s go! See—My betrayer is near.”

  21. THE PAIN OF JESUS CHRIST: • Betrayal of Judas • Illegal mock trial of the Jews • Denial of Peter • Condemnation before the Jews • Illegal mock trial of Pilate and Herod • Rejection of the crowd, releasing Barabbas • Physical abuse

  22. MARK 15:16-19 Then the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters) and called the whole company together. They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on Him. And they began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage.

  23. MARK 15:20-22 When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’ cross. He was Simon, a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus. And they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place).

  24. MARK 15:23-27 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it. Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified Him. The inscription of the charge written against Him was: They crucified two criminals with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

  25. MARK 15:28-30 So the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws. Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days, save Yourself by coming down from the cross!”

  26. MARK 15:31-32 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him.

  27. Where is God, and why does He not intervene?

  28. 3. THE PLAN OF GOD

  29. Where is God?

  30. MARK 15:33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

  31. PSALM 97:2 Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

  32. PSALM 18:8-9,11 Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud beneath His feet. He made darkness His hiding place, dark storm clouds His canopy around Him.

  33. MARK 15:34 And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

  34. MARK 15:37-38 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. Then the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom.

  35. ISAIAH 53:2-3 There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance,
nothing to attract us to him.
 He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.

  36. ISAIAH 53:4-5 Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.

  37. ISAIAH 53:6-7 We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth.

  38. ISAIAH 53:8-9 He was taken away because of oppression and judgment; and who considered His fate? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was struck because of my people’s rebellion. They made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man at His death, although He had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.

  39. ISAIAH 53:10-11 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush Him severely. When You make Him a restitution offering, He will see His seed, He will prolong His days, and by His hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. He will see it out of His anguish, and He will be satisfied with His knowledge. My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will carry their iniquities.

  40. ISAIAH 53:12 Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion, and He will receive the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet He bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

  41. The Centurion

  42. MARK 15:39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!

  43. Member of the Sanhedrin

  44. MARK 15:43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.

  45. Thief on the Cross

  46. LUKE 23:39-43 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”

  47. LUKE 23:39-43 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

  48. Simon from Cyrene

  49. MARK 15:21 A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)
