ENDURANCE COACHING REPORT 2017
Coaching Team - Jacqui Maxwell, Ian Wilson, Sarah Steer, Martin Doherty, Ian Millgate Training
❖Good progress made throughout the year from both our experienced and newer runners and it’s good to see people improve and appreciate the coaching support. ❖Attendance @ MPT is between 20-30 on most Tue nights and the format works well, with people moving up or down the 4-5 pacing groups depending on fitness levels. There is super camaraderie at the track, it hurts, but we all hurt together and there’s always a great sense of achievement after each session. The sessions can be used for various distances from 5K to marathon. People who attend on a regular basis see the results, it’s pure and simple. ❖Sunday club runs have been relaunched led by Martin Doherty. ❖People now know to post their runs throughout the week so there are various opportunities to join training runs whether they be coached or non-coached to suit the majority of members.
Plans & Coaching
❖ Various plans have been produced throughout the year for half and
full marathons to target specific races and times. ❖The monthly plans have been delivered on time by the various coaches and these have been used to target 5K, 10K, XC and the CC races. ❖Coaches Development: Jacqui & Ian W completing their Coach in Running Fitness qualification (Level 2) on 9 Dec.
9
Coaching advice and support introduced in 2017 included:
❖ NI Relays specific training sessions in Vic PK for the distance and pacing. ❖ More detailed info posted pre Tue track sessions; i.e. why we’re doing the session; keeping things interesting with different paced sessions; introducing a track pacing calculator to help people come more prepared; and ensuring warmups and cool downs are fit for purpose. ❖ XC sessions on a few Sun mornings to help get people used to wearing spikes and the different terrain. ❖ Top Tips posted regularly for Marathon/HM/10K/5K and XC, which have been well received
10
Racing Performances (some key highlights and special mentions from 2017)
❖ Dune and Belfast Half Marathons (9 & 12 PBs) ❖ London & Manchester marathons (good for age performances & PBs to secure London entries for 2018). There were also various other PBs and some first time marathoners in Paris, Rotterdam & Dublin. ❖ Queens 5K (12 PBs – Andy McIntyre 16:58) ❖ NI HM Championship @ Lisburn - Women won the bronze medal – (Julie McKimm, Gillian Logan, Heather Shanks-Miller & Carolyn Beattie). ❖ Jimmy's & Seeley 10Ks (12 & 11 PBs) (Women’s A team in Seeley 13/66 - Edwina Ternan, Heather Flint & Pauline Bayliss) ❖ Parkrun PBs throughout the year (breakthrough times and first 3 women @ C’Wellan) ❖ Some excellent performances at the NI Relay Champs (Masters Men A Team 12/57, Stephen Orr, David Montgomery, David Gribben & Andrew Tees who all ran under 12 mins) ❖ Northern Ireland Masters XC representation (Brian Todd & Jacqui Maxwell) ❖ Various podiums and age category wins across all disciplines, including the mountains.
11
Forward Plan for 2018:
❖ Continue to encourage people to attend the MPT sessions and monitor improvements and moving up groups. ❖ Monthly plans will continue and be geared towards the Club Championship and other key races including cross country. ❖ Specific target race plans for early 2018, will include Larne HM; London, Belfast & other spring marathons. ❖ Continue with the race and distance top tips. ❖ Specific training for the NI Relays and XC races. ❖ Bespoke training advice given when required for individuals and groups. ❖ Nutritional & injury advice (more details to follow).

Chairman’s Address
Presidents Cup:
- For dedication to coaching for club members of all abilities. Always enthusiastic and
encouraging us all.
- Consistent commitment throughout the year; the time she takes to put together endurance
plans, the very wise advise she offers before all big races and the fact that she tracks the performances of club members and is so aware of everyone’s standard.
- I think she does an excellent as the Senior Endurance Coach in encouraging everyone,
coordinating the training & producing training plans and organising the Tuesday night training sessions.
- Jacqui works hard with all club members providing help and support both at training
sessions and via Facebook.
- I appreciate reading Jacqui’s training advice - it is always practical, humane and relatable. I
also admire Jacqui’s performance as an athlete
