Madrid Region:

  • One of the largest European

regions in GDP per capita and the Spanish Region with the largest quantity of resources allocated to R&D&I activities (26% of the total allocated in the whole country).

  • It hosts 16 universities, and

the majority of the research centres, health centres, scientific parks and

  • ther

important R&D&I agents.

Fundación madri+d THE CORE OF MADRID R&D&I SYSTEM

Fundación madri+d is a non-profit organisation established in 2002 under the initiative of the Regional Government with the

  • bjective to strengthen and coordinate Madrid R&D Regional

System through common projects in different areas including Science Communication and Scientific Culture. The Foundation has articulated a very strong and trusty network among all the stakeholders involved in science, technology and innovation. Most of the research institutions in Madrid have been collaborating with the Foundation in all the activities aiming to bring closer science and technology to society:

  • Madrid Science Fairs,
  • Science Weeks and
  • Scientific communications through www.madrimasd.org.

The privileged position of Foundation in the Regional system makes this model sustainable. Allows:

  • To coordinate actions involving different agents
  • To join resources
  • To be more efficient in the allocation of resources
  • To reinforce and maximize the messages to be

conveyed.

  • To reach common goals without reducing the

important role played by the ‘subcontractors’.

  • To be an alternative to complex consortia, being

a model fully operational and easier to manage.

  • To generate confidence among the participant

institutions

WHY THE NORTHERN MODEL?

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Before submission of the proposal

  • Invitation to institutions to participate
  • They are requested to define the activities to

be performed and the budget.

  • They are requested to propose researchers and

managers for the Management Bodies.

  • All the proposals are welcomed. Negotiation if

needed

  • Internal Follow-up of EoI (requirements of the

call, activities fun and enjoyable, kind of public, interdisciplinarity, researchers involved (MSC and H2020), impact, audiences, venues, etc.)

HOW DOES IT WORK?

slide-7
SLIDE 7

After the evaluation of the proposal

  • Signing a MoU. It comprises the activities, the

budget for each year, the required reports and the payments.

  • Kick off meeting where people in charge of the

activities and researchers involved talk in a very friendly atmosphere about their activities. A reliable environment is generated.

  • Fluid and active communication Fundación/

subcontractors during the development of the project

  • Subcontractors take part in the whole process

(leaflets, photos, website, logos,etc).

  • Consensus in the general communication plan

and the impact assessment (questionnaires, interviews..)

HOW DOES IT WORK?

slide-8
SLIDE 8
  • Very

close collaboration among the participant institutions.

  • They feel to be treated as beneficiaries or

‘cooperating bodies’ rather than as ‘subcontractors’.

  • All of them have a great experience in
  • rganizing similar events
  • Great confidence generated
  • Importance of combining the resources in

the Region and avoid fragmentation.
