  1. One of 403 Centers for Independent Living (CIL) Nation Wide CILs are community-based, cross- disability, non-profit organizations that are designed and operated by people with disabilities. CILs are unique in that they operate according to a strict philosophy of consumer control, wherein people with all types of disabilities directly govern and staff the organization.

  2. Centers for Independent Living (CIL) Provide:  Peer Support  Information and Referral  Individual and Systems Advocacy  Independent Living Skills Training

  3. Born out of the Civil Rights Movement When the process of deinstitutionalization began in the 1960’s, some people with significant disabilities were released from inevitable life sentences in nursing homes and other institutions, which created for the first time in history an opportunity, an imperative, for people with disabilities to live free and independent lives. From this, a community and a culture with history, values, and an objective were born.

  4. Advocacy We can assist and/or represent individuals with disabilities in obtaining access to benefits, services, and programs to which they may be entitled. We also advocate for system changes that bring more equal access to the community.

  5. Housing Connections for Independent Living has its own Section 8 housing list. Community Transition Services program which is designed to assist people who live in a skilled nursing facility and desire to transition into the community.

  6. Information and Referral Information and referral services to all individuals who need help finding the appropriate community support. We have an updated list of community resources and will provide referrals to the agency/agencies that can best serve the individual.

  7. Peer Support Our staff members who have disabilities provide support, teaching, and information sharing with consumers to help in overcoming barriers, handling the stresses of having a disability, and sharing resources helpful in maintaining independence.

  8. Independent Living Skills Training Instruction to develop independent living skills in areas such as personal care, coping, Champions Program (budgeting), social skills, and household management. This may also include education and training necessary for living in the community and participation in community activities.

  9. Technology Lab We have several computers, with Internet service, available for your use. Software includes Microsoft Office (with Word and Excel), Talking Typing Teacher for those who want to learn to type, Zoomtext for people with low vision, and Jaws for the blind. We also have a Public Access Video monitor for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
