1988

  • Envisioned by former Secretary of Health and Founder of Common Cause

John Gardner

1995- 1996

  • Pilot project launched in 5 programs through Public Private Ventures (PPV)
  • Funded by CNCS/AmeriCorps

1997- 1998

  • 4 programs added
  • Focus on literacy begins

1998

  • Civic Ventures (now Encore.org) spun off from PPV to focus on expanding EC

2011- 2015

  • Moved to AARP
  • Merged into the AARP Foundation

Annual Replication Calendar

We have developed a process to explore new communities and vet potential host agencies. We support sound prospects through an application process:

  • Dec 5 : Application Deadline. Host Agency (HA) applications submitted to EC
  • Dec 31: Determination. EC HQ Completes HA assessment and landscape

analysis; Go/No Go or more information needed

  • March: EC HQ Issues Invitation to Affiliate; Affiliate Agreement executed and

Year 1 implementation plan developed

  • April 1: Schools and volunteers recruitment commences
  • August 15: Volunteer training agenda, content, and program finalized
  • Fall: Launch of EC tutoring
