What’s in the toolkit? • Background – approach and key messages • Responsive Feeding Practices – making mealtime enjoyable • Supportive Environments – to encourage healthy eating • Policies – samples you can use • Menu Planning and Recipes • Activities – 13 ideas for program learning times • Supporting and Engaging Families – sample newsletters, tips and resources

How the toolkit can be used in your child care setting • Use helpful phrases and actions in response to common eating situations to encourage a supportive nutrition environment • Develop one or more nutrition policies that align with your centre • Integrate recipes and menu planning tips into menu • Use Paint Your Plate activities for daily activities • Feature a seasonal recipe in the centre’s newsletter • Display the Paint Your Plate posters in the halls, in each classroom, and at the entrance to the child care centre. • Display vegetable and fruit fact sheets for parents to take home. Post the sheets beside your menu.

Module 1: Introduction and Choosing Foods • Part 1 - Introduction and Choosing Food • For child care operators, supervisors, cooks and staff who are working in the child care setting, these online courses will help you understand and apply the nutrition recommendations outlined in the Menu Planning & Supportive Nutrition Environments in Child Care Settings - Practical Guide . • Duration: 20 minutes

  9. Module 2: Amounts to Prepare (for cooks) • Part 2 - Amounts to Prepare (for cooks) • Learn about recommended portion sizes to inform how much food to prepare, family-style meals and feeding young children positively. • Duration: 10 minutes

  10. Module 3: Planning and Revising a Menu • Part 3 - Planning and Revising a Menu • This module will cover menu planning for child care settings. This includes what to offer at meal and snack time and menu planning considerations when feeding young children. • Duration: 15 minutes

Module 4: Creating a Supportive Nutrition Environment and Resources • Part 4 - Creating a Supportive Nutrition Environment and Resources • This module will include information on how to support children to become competent and capable eaters. This includes maintaining the Division of Responsibility in feeding and creating positive mealtimes. Additional resources for child care staff will also be reviewed. • Duration: 20 minutes

  12. Ideas on how to watch the modules with your staff • Watch during staff meetings all at once or one at a time (65 min total) • Staff watch on their own • Have a discussion after each module • Decide how to apply the learning

  15. Canada’s Food Guide – NEW! Released January 2019 • “Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat”. Cook more often, enjoy food, and eat with others. Make water your drink of choice. • Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and plant-based protein foods. Limit highly processed foods. • Use food labels.
