Ambassadors represent NCC while attending their home schools, community events, and at NCC. When giving presentations, ambassadors are expected to dress in khaki pants and wear approved NCC logo apparel. T-shirts and jeans are not allowed. Attendance Policy for NCC students…

✓ Information regarding NCC policies can be found in our student

  • handbook. Attendance is one of our focus areas for student

achievement and success. Students who attend NCC regularly are successful. (Updated handbook to be printed in July) ✓ We have high expectations for student success and want to be upfront with our policy. ✓ Parents/Guardians should contact NCC the day of or prior to their student’s absence. (For employability grade - Other options) ✓ The contact is noted in the system and is important if the student misses more than the allotted days. ✓ There are no excused absences, however, school sponsored field trips (NCC or sending school) are marked with an “F” in the attendance field to denote a field trip. ✓ Students have two days per year for bereavement, as well as, college visits, military visits or program related interviews.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Students may earn back up to 3 days by setting up “Time for Time”. TFT will only be applied to absences when a student contacts the school before class. Exceptions for absences may be made for long term or family hardships

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Attendance Policy for NCC students continued…

✓ A student can miss no more than 10 days per year. ✓ Students missing 11 to 12 days per year may return on attendance probation if they meet the academic requirements, have fewer than 2 discipline referrals, and are recommended by their instructor. ✓ Students allowed to return on probation may miss 3 days the following semester. Time for time may not be utilized. ✓ Student, parent, and home school counselor are contacted at 5, 8, 11, and 13 days of absences. ✓ Students may use up to 3 days of “Time for Time”. Students should contact their instructor when they will be absent to use TFT.

✓ Students and parents who have questions or concerns about attendance, should contact NCC Building Administrative Assistant

  • r Mr. Green, Student Management Coordinator.

Attendance Rewards for Students

✓ Students at NCC are rewarded for perfect and excellent attendance. ✓ Perfect attendance is zero absences during a quarter, semester, year, or two years and recognized with a gold certificate. ✓ Excellent attendance is awarded for two or fewer absences over the course of a quarter, or semester and is awarded with a blue certificate. ✓ Students who earn excellent or perfect attendance for the semester receive a T-shirt. ✓ Students with perfect attendance for the semester also receive a gift from their instructor. ✓ Students with perfect attendance for the year, also receive a gift from the school. ✓ Students with perfect attendance for 2 years are recognized at the NCC Graduation

NCC Grading Procedures for 2014-2018

40% of grade 45% of grade 5% = English 5% = Math 5% is categorized as “other” Our staff has made a bold decision in 2014-2015 to make teaching and grading “Essential Employability Skills” a priority. All research and feedback from business and industry shows that students are lacking employability skills. This will be a large part of your student’s grade.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Driving/Parking Procedures

✓ Northland Career Center has parking for Platte County and Sending School students. ✓ Parking passes are sold for $10.00 for the year. Students will get a sticker to place on their lower left windshield ✓ Student vehicles will only be permitted to park on school grounds when an NCC permit is clearly visible hanging on the rearview mirror of the vehicle ✓ High school students wishing to drive to school must acquire a driving/parking permit from NCC and get all signatures prior to

  • driving. If a student has an immediate, unplanned reason to drive to NCC,

they must check in with the front office and obtain a temporary parking

  • permit. This temporary permit must be displayed on the dash of the vehicle

while parked at NCC. After receiving your temporary permit, all students should park in the lower lot. After 5 occurrences, a $10 parking fee will be applied to the students’ obligation list. ✓ High school students should not transport other students to and from school or off campus during the school day unless prior permission has been granted by the sending school.

specialized uniforms, tools, and has a dress code that is expected to be followed

  • Information regarding these fees will be available on our

website and sent out in a mailing in mid July

  • These fees should be paid at enrollment sessions on

Aug 1st, Aug 8th, or Aug 9th as part of the enrollment process – Arrangements can be made if needed and communicated to NCC Administration

  • Fees are $99 or less with options in some cases to buy

additional supplies/uniforms to support learning

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Summer Mailing to Parents

  • Around July 17th, parents will receive a

Industry Recognized Credentials

✓ NCC students go to college, military, advanced training, and into immediate career employment upon graduating. ✓ Each student at NCC can earn either an employment ready credential or they can earn the student version of the credential that is sponsored by the credentialing agency. ✓ These assessments are similar to End of Course Exams at the high schools, but focus on career ready, technical skills relevant to your student’s career program. ✓ These credentials can earn a student a job or advanced placement in a training program or college professional program. ✓ NCC also has college credit available in many of its programs.

✓ College credit can be articulated or dual credit

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Internships and other work-based learning

✓ NCC recognizes that providing relevant experiences to students means providing experiences in the field outside of the classroom/lab/shop. ✓ Students in Health Science and Teacher Professions will have clinical and observation experiences. ✓ All seniors who have met the necessary criteria may choose to pursue an internship their 2nd semester of their senior year for 2nd year seniors or 4th quarter for 1st year seniors. ✓ Every student each year participate in mock interviews with relevant business and industry from their program area. ✓ NCC relies upon its business and industry partners to be guest speakers, mentors, field trips, and job shadowing experiences…are you a potential partner?

  • I leave you with two thoughts regarding your

child’s instructor ➢ We have adults that care about students and will

care about your student as an individual. They will challenge your student with high expectations, but they will also provide guidance on how to reach those high expectations they set. ➢ We believe in learning and continuous improvement. Your son or daughter will be better prepared for the real world when they leave NCC by working with the teacher they have…I can promise you that.

  • Questions Parents Asked Through the Survey:

➢ Do you give extra help to a child with learning

disabilities? ■ Yes, NCC offers a student support team that assist

  • ur instructors to work with students who have

Individual Education Programs (IEP) or a 504 Plan. Students can receive extra help within their regular program or classroom as well as extra help in our Student Services Center ➢ Students earn Certificates? How does this work with college and potential college credit? ■ Many of NCC’s programs offer either a credential or college credit or both. The curriculum the students learn while at NCC is aligned to meet these two

  • standards. Other programs are tied closely to

local partnering businesses or post-secondary institutions that allow seamless transitions for our graduates ➢ Is there anything my son/daughter should do to prepare

  • ver the summer?

➢ How/When are students transported to and from their sending schools?

slide-23
SLIDE 23
  • Questions Parents Asked Through the Survey

(Cont’):

➢ Is there anything my son/daughter should do to prepare

  • ver the summer?

■ Please see the summer mailing that will come to your home around July 17. This will have key documents that need to be filled out and will discuss the dress code requirements for each program. Talk with him/her about the importance of attendance and the planning of a career that will be here sooner than we can imagine! ➢ How/When are students transported to and from their sending schools? ■ Each school district sends a bus from the local high school with exception of Kearney. Those buses typically leave to come to NCC after students have arrived via bus or car to the high school. Buses are sent on days when NCC is in session even if the sending school is out that day.

  • Questions Parents at the Event this Evening

➢ What are NCC’s Start Times and How does the Calendar Work?

■ NCC Has two sessions

  • AM Session is 8:00 - 10:40 M-F
  • PM Session is 11:30 - 2:10 M-F

■ NCC has a 175 day calendar and begins classes on August 16. NCC follows the Platte County School District Calendar and is also off for snow days when PCSD cancels classes due to inclimate weather.

  • As stated on previous slide, the sending schools will send

a bus on days where NCC is in session and the sending school is not. If a student misses it counts against their allotment.

➢ How does my student get involved in the CTSO’s (Slides 4-7) ■ Students will receive more information about the

  • pportunities, schedules, and costs of our student
  • rganizations at the beginnnig of the year. Getting

involved may benefit them by having “deeper” & more meaningful experiences and also is something they can add to their resume.
