GENERAL NOTES: REMOVE ENTIRE EXISTING ELECTRONIC SIGNAGE. a. Prior to any work under this project, Contractor shall file for, and

  • btain "Work Permit" from the NYC Landmark Preservation Commision

and/or NYC Department of Buildings as required. b. The contractor shall field verify all existing conditions prior to the commencement of this work. Any discrepancies shall be brought to the attention of the Architect at once. No demolition work shall commence without field verification by the contractor and Architect. c. It is the contractor's responsibility to locate and remove all Mechanical, Electrical, & Miscellaneous related equipment as required to completely remove the wall mounted screen, and related wall bracket carefully, without any further damage to the exisitng stone units and building facade. d. Contractor shall provide temporary structural support for the entire assembly prior to the actual removal, in order to prevent any further damage to the stone units and/or wall surface behind. e. The entire screen assembly shall be carefully and safely uninstalled, disassembled and delivered to a location as directed by the Church. f. The preference is to retain and preserve the existing facade finishes as monolithic and as weathered as possible. Therefore special care must be taken to avoid chipping off, staining, cracking, or loosening up existing masonry unit surfaces. g. Upon complete removal of the screen, fasteners, and all support brackets, contractor shall schedule a field visit by the Architect for visual inspection and further specific directives to proceed with repair and restoration of wall surfaces. h. Acidic cleaners or highly alkaline cleaners shall not be used to clean any portion of the wall surfaces. Only non-acidic neutral pH detergents shall be used in conjunction with non-metallic brushes or scrapers. Cleaning methods should be carefully selected to do the job without further harming the historic material. i. If water pressure is used for cleaning, the pressure shall not exceed 150-200 psi. Abrasive methods such as grit blasting or "sandblasting" should never be used. j. Test patches shall be performed prior to selecting a removal product

  • r method, beginning with the lowest recommended concentration of

product and working upward to find the appropriate level.

  • k. If and when required, removal of existing loose mortars should be

performed using hand-held, non-power tools. Carefully controlled pneumatic chisels or small grinders may be appropriate, but must

  • nly be handled by hands with extensive experience and quality

control to assure that the masonry units are not damaged.

  • l. New mortar shall match the existing in strength, composition, color,

texture, aggregate distribution and all other qualities as determined by a laboratory analysis.

  • m. All new joint mortar shall match existing in width, tooling, texture and
  • profile. Special character-defining joints such as "ruled" or

"grapevine" shall be repaired or reproduced carefully.

  • n. Since the damaged stone units are difficult to repair, replacement

may be most appropriate and may involve using new or salvaged

  • units. If repair is not possible and replacement is necessary, new

units shall match the existing in size, color, texture and all other qualities exactly. In accordance with preservation Standards, the best remedy is always to repair. Replacement should only be considered if the material is deteriorated beyond repair. Where cracked, spalled or exfoliated, limestone, sandstone, marble, terra cotta, cast stone or concrete materials should be repaired to prevent further damage.

  • . If mortar analysis is not undertaken to determine the composition of

the original mortar, the following soft, lime-rich mortar mix may be appropriate for use on most historic masonry: 1 part white Portland cement; 3 parts Type S hydrated lime; 6 parts sand with no admixtures since color additives can weaken masonry if used in large quantities, a color match is best achieved using only appropriate colored aggregates (sand, brick dust, etc.) All information on appropriate specific treatment for historic masonry materials were obtained from SHPO Scale Project Number Date Drawn by Checked by
