PPPs are deployed in infrastructure • Roads, railroads, tunnels and bridges • Airports, sea ports • Energy generation and transmission • Hospitals, schools, kindergartens, stadiums 5

Why PPPs? PPPs attract private investment and may make it profitable PPPs are driven by the profit motive Profit seeking leads to innovation 6

PPPs can: 1. Construct new or rebuild outdated infrastructure 2. Ensure efficient and cost effective management of infrastructure BUT: PPPs often to not deliver value-for- money 7

Question Can PPPs fit the purpose of resource efficiency? 8

Research Interests Main theme: PPPs and efficiency: what are the tools and incentives? Research problem Can PPP contribute to sustainable development (SD) by effective risk management and utilisation of resources? 9

Another perspective If PPPs lack efficiency, are they capable to create social value that outweighs financial outlays? How can stakeholders (government, private firms, community groups, citizens) increase PPP capacity to ensure greater efficiency and greater social value? 10
