But New Orleans public schools also take a holistic approach: Emphasis on soft-skills

New Orleans schools have common aspirations for all of our city’s young people, who hold incredible promise, and we know that our graduates need to become these five things to reach their dreams: An Effective Communicator A Life-Long Learner A Critical Thinker A Resilient Human An Engaged Citizen Known for compelling speech, clear writing, deep listening, and effective use of technology. With a deep commitment to learning about a variety of subjects and perspectives. With the ability to absorb, synthesize, and adapt to new information. Prepared to overcome obstacles to take care of their community and their own mind, body, and spirit. With the ability to engage with community issues through empathy and leadership. 1 2 3 4 5

New Orleans public schools takes a holistic approach: Emphasis on music education

  • Historically, music has been a corner stone of New Orleans school culture with

marching bands being a proud tradition

  • New Orleans has produced some of America’s best musicians starting back with

legends like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton

  • That endures today: Trombone Shorty, Harry Connick, Jr., Wynton Marsalis, Aaron

Neville, Terrance Blanchard, Jon Batiste, Dr. John, & Pete Fountain, just to name a few

  • In and out of school - we dance, we sing, we play, we learn, we teach
  • But some schools can’t afford instruments or instructors

Expanding VH1 Save The Music Partnership in New Orleans In 2017, the VH1 Save The Music donated $60,000 worth of grant package to Morris Jeff Community School for instruments to help them start a band. In 2018, we are looking to further expand this great partnership!

Questions

  • Under a reunified district, will there be any new mechanisms in

place that will help outside organizations communicate with school leaders across networks and schools?

  • What are some of the ways that a decentralized district actually

facilitates opportunities for excellence in music?
