New Colombo Plan Scholarship Program
A signature initiative of the Australian Government
The Australian Government offer prestigious New Colombo Plan scholarships to high-achieving undergraduate students with the goal to:
- Lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia
- Deepen Australia’s relationships with the region
- Be transformational in establishing study in the Indo-Pacific region to
become a ‘rite of passage’ for Australian undergraduate students
- Increase the number of work-ready Australian graduates with regional
experience
Benefits of the Scholarship
- A travel allowance - $2,500
- An establishment allowance - $2,500
- A variable location-based monthly stipend of up to $2,500
- Health & travel insurance
- A certificate of completion
A scholarship may also provide:
- Payment of up to one Academic Year’s international tuition fees to a
maximum of $15,000, payable directly to the Host Institution
- Payment of $1,000 for in-country language training fees, payable to
the language training provider

About NCP - Study component
Scholars must:
- undertake a full-time study program at a university from one of the
eligible countries
- must receive credit towards their courses at QUT
- study full-time for at least one semester, and up to one full Academic Year
(longer programs are preferred) This semester can be coursework or research-based. QUT Exchange Partners are preferred, however it is possible to study at a non-partner institution if there are no other options in your chosen country.
About NCP - Internship/Mentorship component
- Strongly encouraged
- Internships may undertaken prior, during or after your exchange study
- part-time basis concurrent with the exchange study OR
- full-time basis (for a max. of 6 months) subsequent to the exchange study
- Mentorship
- part-time basis concurrent with study only
- It is your responsibility to arrange and confirm your internship/mentorship
- Ensure you have appropriate visas at all stages of your time in the host
location
- An internship or mentorship alone cannot constitute a Scholarship Program

About NCP – Community engagement and advocacy
Scholars are encouraged to participate in activities that share the experiences of their Scholarship program with other students and their community
Eligibility
Students must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be enrolled in QUT at the time of application
- be between 18 and 28 (inclusive) years of age as at 1/1/2018
- be undertaking a Bachelor Degree/ Bachelor Honours Degree
- have completed at least one year of their Bachelor Degree at the
commencement of the Scholarship Program
- have achieved a minimum 5.5 GPA for their UG course to date
- not be undertaking another Australian Government funded off-shore
scholarship at the commencement of, or currently, with the Scholarship Program
- not be a previous recipient of a NCP Scholarship

Sept - Oct Shortlisted applicants are notified and interviewed Nov All successful and unsuccessful applicants are notified of the outcome of their application Jan – Dec 2018 Successful Scholars leave for their Scholarship Program 22-23 June Shortlisting interviews conducted for QUT applicants Early Aug Application Workshop for all nominated students 1 July QUT nominates 10 shortlisted students to Aus. Govt.
Lessons from previous years
Common areas where responses could have been strengthened:
- Better articulation of the applicant’s motivations for and interest in applying for the NCP
(look at the aims or the goals of the program and align with them)
- A strong awareness of how the scholarship would be used to benefit the applicant’s
academic studies, and how an internship or mentorship might help applicants to define
- r achieve their future goals.
- A greater understanding of the broader strategic goals of the NCP and how the
applicant’s studies and internship or mentorship experience would contribute to these
- Concrete examples to demonstrate academic accomplishments at the university level
- Concrete the applicant’s community activities, and examples of leadership within
leadership beyond the applicant’s university community
- Demonstration of greater research on the applicant’s proposed host location
- A well considered proposal plan for study and internships to maximize the time spent
in-country
