INDUSTRY FUNCTION / USAGE

Edible Oils & Fats

Hydrogenation of oils and fats to raise the melting point. Widely used for i.e. production of margarine and shortenings for converting of edible oil from liquid to solidstate

Metallurgy

Used in a number of high quality special steel production processes. It is commonly used in annealing furnaces (heat treatment) that require an protective atmosphere to avoidoxidation.

Float Glass

The production of flat glass is done in a process where glass is floated in a bed of molten tin where a sheet of glass is formed by floatation. Glass is cooled in a controlled protective atmosphere of roughly 94-95% nitrogen and 5-6% hydrogen

Electronics

In the production of electronic packages (Semiconductorand integrated circuit) the presence of moisture and oxides can lead to reductions in

  • yields. Nitrogen and hydrogen are used to ensure the atmosphere is free of moisture and other impurities

Chemicals / Petrochemicals

Hydrogen is a key chemical buildingblock in many chemical processes.Apart from ammonia and methanol, hydrogen peroxide, sorbitol, PTA,

  • leochemicalsand many other chemical or petrochemical products use hydrogen in their process.

Power Plants

Friction in turbine generators produces large amounts of heat. Hydrogen has a small molecule size, giving it low viscosity. This, together with its superior heat absorptioncharacteristics makes hydrogen ideally suited as a coolingmedium for generators in power plants

Polysilicon

Polysiliconis a material consistingof small silicon crystals, and is used for silicon ingots and wafer productionfor the solar cell industry. In the productionof polysiliconused the Siemens-process,large amounts of hydrogen is used to react with thrichloresilan gas to produce silicon 9

AWARDED MULTI—BILLION NOK ELECTROLYSER AND FUELLING STATION CONTRACT BY NIKOLA

The transformational Nikola partnership

Contract for delivery of up to 448 electrolysers / 1 GW of electrolysis

  • Contract awarded as part of Nikola’s development of a hydrogen

station infrastructure in the U.S.

  • Multi-billion NOK electrolyzer and fueling station contract, to be

deployed from 2020 – by far the largest electrolyzer contract ever awarded

  • The contract includes an initial order for an engineering package of

around USD 1.5 million

  • Electrolyzer stacks to be manufactured in Norway, fueling

equipment in Denmark - supporting components, including frames, pipes and vessels to be sourced locally in the U.S.

1927 – WHEN IT ALL STARTED

  • Norsk Hydro decide to go for ammonia-based fertilizer (Haber-Bosch), rather than

existing Birkeland-Eyde process

– Starting point for huge investments in electrolyser R&D / technology

  • Two electrolyser technologies tested at Notodden; Pechkrantz-cells and Holmboe-cells.

Pechkrantz selected as best technology

  • Three plants installed in Rjukan, Norway:
