  1. NCAA Major Changes Matt Davis

  2. Points of Emphasis - 2014 • Touching either crosse on the faceoffs • Illegal tactics when defending – Cross check – Cross check hold • Sideline behavior

  3. 1-10 Substitution Area • Substitution box expanded to be 20 yards . • Dimensions of the Coaches, Team and Bench Areas remain the same.

  4. The Field - NCAA • Drawing not to scale – coaches area does not extend this far.

  5. 1-16 Number of Balls • A minimum of six balls and a maximum of 10 balls must be available at each end line and sideline. • On the bench side, balls should be placed at the scorer’s table and outside each bench area. • Don’t be too good. Ensure there are plenty of balls

  6. 1-17 – 19 Stick Specifications • Limited “Donuts” are now allowed. – Memo pending • Any strings or laces (e.g., shooting strings) must be will be located within 4 inches from the top of the crosse in an arc. • No more than one sidewall string on each side of the crosse will be allowed. • No crosse may have any tape affixed to the head. – except GK

  7. 1-17 – 19 Stick Specifications

  8. Stick Check Procedures • The roll out test • Rotate the cross forward from vertical • Rotate the cross forward from horizontal • Three-minute non- releasable foul if the stick fails any of these tests

  9. Stick Check Procedures • Shooting String Measurement • Three-minute non-releasable foul if the stick fails this test

  10. 4-3 Faceoffs • Faceoff player is no longer required to leave the field on a violation. • A single wrap of contrasting tape required on the stick. Must go 6” down the stick. • Third pre-whistle violation of each half results in a technical foul. • Violations by the wing players before or during the faceoff will count toward the three per half.

  11. 4-3 Faceoffs • Specific “Post Whistle” fouls involving the FO players count against the three per half. • Pinning an opponent’s crosse/arm immediately after the whistle, while the faceoff men are still in a battling position. • Once the ball skirts free from the faceoff men, normal rules apply. • A push, after the ball is in the open field, would not constitute a “faceoff violation.” • The violation-count restarts for overtime. • Reduce the use of Play-on when players are crouched and battling

  12. 4-4 Position of Players FO • During man-down faceoffs, there must be four players in the defensive area and three players in the offensive area. • Exception: When a team has three or more players serving penalties, a player may come out of its defensive area to take the faceoff.

  13. 4-8 Scoring • A.R. 42. If the goal cage is accidentally dislodged during play, officials shall let a scoring play continue and allow the goal if the ball enters the goal cage. Officials should stop play if/when no scoring play exists and replace the goal cage. • Hopkins – Maryland 2013

  14. 4-14 Advancing the ball • “Get it in/Keep it in” count has been removed. • If the offense causes a ball to return to the defensive half of the field and the offensive team regains possession – TIMER ON • Exceptions: A 30-second TIMER ON will * NOT* be awarded in these situations: – 1. A shot that leaves the offensive half of the field. – 2. A loose ball that leaves the offensive half of the field and was last touched (or deflected) by the defensive team. – 3. A loose ball that leaves the offensive half of the field and the defense is called for loose ball technical or caused the ball to go out of bounds. – 4. *During man-up or man-down situations.*

  15. 4-18 Goal Crease Privilege • The goalkeeper is no longer given five-seconds to return to the crease on a restart • Regardless of where the ball is restarted.

  16. 4-21 Substitution • No Horns - Substitutions will now be made on the fly. • Free substitutions are allowed in the following situations: – End of a period. – Scoring of a goal. – Injury timeout. – After a time-serving penalty. – Equipment issue resulting in a stoppage.

  17. 4-23 Restarts • Quick yet controlled restarts • Once the officials are ready – restart play • 5 yard cushion on the defense • Offensive player cannot alter path to create contact • Contact within the first 5 yards technical foul • Out of bounds – The player must establish ball and feet in bounds. – The player is not allowed a full free run from out of bounds.

  18. 4-23 Restarts • Open Field • Do not stop play to ensure player is in the exact location of the foul. • Player can be moving on the field • Ensure the player is 5 yards from the substitution box • Within the offensive zone • Offense – A single pass is allowed outside the box • Defense – You may restart within the box and crease.

  19. 6-5 Illegal Offensive Screen • Player must stay within his vertical plane. • Stance no wider than shoulder width apart. • No leaning into the path of an opponent even though feet are stationary. • No extending of the stick into an opponent. • No contact from the screen while the screen is in motion.

  20. 6-11 Stalling • The “get it in, keep it in” call has been removed. • When a team is given a stall warning, a shot must be taken within 30 seconds. • Both teams must be at full strength before a stall warning can be issued. • The count will be administered by the on-field officials (trail) and there will not be a visible clock.

  21. 6-11 Stalling • A valid shot is defined as • Hits the goal within the crease • Hits the goal pipe • If the 30 seconds expires without a shot on goal, the ball will be awarded to the defensive team.

  22. 6-11 Stalling - Mechanics • The entire crew should signal timer on, once signaled the trail will start the 20 second timer. • At the end of the 20 seconds, a 10 second hand count is administered by the trail official. • The trail official should provide an audible count. • 10, 9, 8, 7….

  23. 6-11 Stalling - Mechanics • Timer on – ball goes out of bounds • More than 10 seconds remaining in the count, the timer continues to run and the procedure continues. • If the timer expires before the restart, a 10-second hand count will be administered starting on the restart. • 10 seconds or less remaining in the count the hand count will stop and start with the whistle. • Communicate with coaches

  24. 6-11 Stalling - Mechanics • If the offensive team calls a timeout when the “timer on” is engaged. Timeout granted. • More than 10 seconds remaining in the count, the timer continues to run. • If the timer expires before the restart, a 10-second hand count will be administered starting on the restart. • 10 seconds or less remaining in the count the hand count will stop and start with the whistle. • If the defensive team call for a dead ball time out a new 30 count will be provided.

  25. 6-11 Stalling - Mechanics • Timer on – Penalty • Penalty by the defense results in a timer reset. Loose ball or flag down. • Timer on – inadvertent whistle • Mistake by officials, new 30 count will be provided if the buzzer has not sounded. Continue the stop/start if 10 or under. • Timer on – offensive injury • Treated like an offensive time out. The 20 count continues. The 10 count is a stop start count. • Timer on – defensive injury • Treated like a defensive time out – a new 30 count is provided.

  26. 6-11 Last Two Minutes • The automatic requirement in the last two minutes of the game requiring a team to keep the ball in the box has been removed.
