INTRODUCTION TO ERASE MM Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) supports agencies that coordinate and manage maternal mortality review committees to understand why maternal mortality in the United States is increasing, and identify interventions to prevent maternal deaths. The initiative supports a national approach to collecting data and foster collaboration that can lead to effective interventions.

Deborah Burch, DNP, RN has worked as a nurse in a variety of clinical settings including labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn nursery, and prenatal clinic for 32 years. For 10 years, she worked for the Florida Department of Health where she served as a maternal/child health nurse consultant and the Coordinator of the Florida Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review. Currently, she is a professor of nursing at Thomas University in Thomasville, GA. In addition to teaching full-time Deb is a medical record abstractor and member of the Florida Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review.

  • Dr. Burch is a consultant on the ERASE MM initiative.

PURPOSE AND PROCESS FOR MONTHLY ABSTRACTOR OFFICE HOURS CALLS

Purpose: To promote optimal retrieval and documentation of maternal death case information that supports efficient and effective case review. Process: Hold semi-structured monthly calls to informally discuss:

➢ Access to records/challenges or barriers ➢ Authorities/confidentiality ➢ Data entry into MMRIA ➢ Abstractor procedural guidelines ➢ Developing case narratives ➢ Facilitation of case review ➢ Abstractor Self-Care

What are the recommendations for finding and obtaining records on substance overdose cases when there are no obvious links to medical records? Situation: Patient pregnant at time of death (cause of death –overdose). Only records available are the autopsy, investigative report, and toxicology. No mention of any medical provider or facility.
