PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC OCTOBER 29-30, 2013

A technical scientific work group session on microbiological processes was organized : WG5 at IGD-TP, EF4

7

slide-8
SLIDE 8

WG-5 DESCRIPTION

  • >27 participants from research and performance

assessment – an interdisciplinary group

  • Waste management organisations
  • Technical support organisations
  • Universities
  • Consulting companies
  • National research centers/institutes
  • Gender perspective: 50/50
  • 9 countries represented
  • 9 presentations from 6 countries

PRESENCE OF MICROORGANISMS

  • Microbes are everywhere including the underground –

the deep biosphere

  • Microbial life change chemical equilibria.
  • Microorganisms influence and change the geochemical

environment, e.g. pH, Eh BUT

  • Microbial processes are missing in the current

strategic research agenda (SRA)

9

slide-10
SLIDE 10

SRA KEY TOPIC 1 SAFETY CASE

  • “The safety case must be able to describe the evolution
  • f the repository in a way that can be seen as a

reasonable representation of what might happen and that also gives a clear indication of uncertainties in the description”.

  • WG-5 noted that the SRA lacks representation of

microbial processes and indication of uncertainties caused by microbial processes.

10

slide-11
SLIDE 11

MAIN MICROBIAL PROCESSES

  • Microbially induced degradation
  • Corrosion of metal canisters
  • Degradation of buffer, backfill and cement
  • Gases
  • Production −
  • Consumption +
  • Migration
  • Mobilisation −
  • Immobilisation +

11

SLIDE 12

GOAL: A TECHNICAL SCIENTIFIC WORKING GROUP ON BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES

  • Review past and present research and models.
  • Understand uncertainties in the safety case caused

by microbial processes.

  • Evaluate how knowledge about microbial processes

can be merged into present safety models and concepts.

  • Identify gaps in knowledge and suggest research

needs.

  • Define a scope of a proposal to be submitted to an

EC call or a specific project co financed by the WMOs.

  • Finally put together an application to the

commission.

HORIZON 2020 MEETING IN STOCKHOLM APRIL 29, 2014

  • The following WMOs attended the meeting hosted by

SKB: Posiva, Nagra, Ondraf/Niras, TVO, NDA, GRS and SKB were present. ANDRA contributed with ideas via email.

  • Contributors to the application: Micans, EPFL, NNL, BGS,

HZDR, SCK*CEN, VTT, IRSN, University of Granada, GTK, TUL and Safram Oy. Petra Christensen (SKB) opened up an application immediately after the meeting

WORKPACKAGES

WP3 (Katinka Wouters, SCK*CEN)

Integration, communication and dissemination. In addition WP3 will evaluate and integrate microbial processes towards the conceptualization and performance assessment of geological repositories and in the respective state of the art knowledge base.

WP2 (Karsten Pedersen, Micans)

Remaining key issues for the geological disposal of HLW concern the factors controlling sulphide production in the geosphere, including man-made artefacts to what extent microorganisms can accelerate canister corrosion in the near-field either by hydrogen scavenging or by sulphide and/or acetate production.

WP1 (Joe Small, NNL)

Remaining key issues for the geological disposal of ILW concern the long-term behaviour, fate and consequences of organic materials in the waste along with hydrogen generated by corrosion and radiolysis.

WP4 (Petra Christensen, SKB)

Handles project management.
