SLIDE 3
Preparing young people for jobs that do not exist, to use technology not invented and solve problems we do not yet know!
SLIDE 4
Did you know?:
- Top 10 in demand jobs in 2010 didn’t exist in 2004
- Young people are expected to have 10-14 jobs by
the age of 38
- 1 in 4 workers have been with their current
employer less than a year
SLIDE 5
Our world is changing and changing fast!
SLIDE 6
A young person who has 4 or more encounters with an employer is 86% less likely to be:
- unemployed or NEET (Not in Employment or Training)
- can earn up to 18% more during their career
SLIDE 7
Employers are from Mars, young people are from Venus
- Young people are disadvantaged in today’s labour market, with
employers preferring to recruit more experienced workers.
- Many employers don’t recruit young people because they worry about
the level of investment they need to provide.
- Both employers and young people have unrealistic expectations about
what they can offer each other
- Employers de-select young people according to their qualifications and
grades but emphasise the value of soft skills, motivation, attitude and behaviour in their selection criteria CIPD research report April 2013
SLIDE 8
- Employers’ views on young people going through the recruitment
process are fairly negative, with preparation, presentation, confidence and the ability to ‘sell’ themselves being an issue
- Young people struggle with where to look for jobs, how to apply and
how to ‘market’ themselves to potential employers
- Young people struggle with accessing work experience and lack of
networks and contacts that would allow them to find out about
- pportunities
- Employers should try to use social media in their recruitment strategy,
as this will be a good way of reaching young people CIPD research report April 2013
