Changes in ACS Public Events Policy…Earth Day and More

  • ACS (through CCA) is discouraging public events and encouraging

virtual alternatives. New guidelines for the National CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest have been posted at https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ccew/plan-an- event/illustrated-poem-contest.html

– All submissions and judging will be virtual – Local contest deadlines are staying the same for now (4/23); teachers can sponsor, but other sponsors like Scout Leaders or Boys & Girls Club coordinators can also facilitate submissions. Contact Michelle Rivard for details.

  • Earth Action Expo (scheduled for 4/19 at Dow High has been postponed; if it

can’t be rescheduled later, independent activities may occur as public health conditions allow. (Examples: volunteering at the recycling center or planting trees)

  • Speakers from 4/19 are being rescheduled for Zoom talks (see following

slides—please JOIN! These will be recorded and posted.

  • Three activity videos have been made & will be posted on website/facebook

From Rust to Resilience: What Climate Change Means for Great Lakes Cities

Hotter heat waves, more intense flooding and the severity of storms are expected to increase as climate change advances on the Great Lakes region. With aging infrastructure and sewer systems and shorelines being proven susceptible to varying water levels, Great Lakes communities are especially susceptible to climate change impacts. This program explains the dynamics of climate change as well as the responses in some cities.

Here Today –Renewable Solutions to Climate Change

Many Americans are not aware that renewable energy, solar and wind, are already the cheapest source of new electrical generation, and Mid- Michigan has now become a leader in deploying them! Peter Sinclair is a Michigan-based Videographer, specializing in climate change and

renewable energy issues. Mr. Sinclair has created hundreds of educational videos correcting climate science misinformation, including the monthly "This is Not Cool" series for Yale Climate Connections, which has run since February 2012. Mr. Sinclair is also Media Director of The Dark Snow Project, a crowd-funded, international Climate Communications effort, focusing on the Greenland ice sheet and sea level rise.

Next Steps

  • Students who take the local test are normally recognized with ACS certificates –

the teachers received blank copies of the certificates to print students’ names

  • The top students will be nominated to the next level
  • We keep receiving guidelines from the National Chemistry Olympiad manager
  • Completion of the Local Exam and selection of students for the National Exam

was extended to April 16

  • The laboratory practical (Part 3) of the National Exam has been canceled
  • The national exam window for Parts 1 and 2 is extended to April 25-May 3
  • Sections are encouraged to make decisions based on local guidelines and their

unique situation

  • We need to use options that would give the students who have worked hard

throughout the year an opportunity to test their knowledge in a safe manner

  • In particular, can we organize this test online?
