Homework - Reading

  • All year 7 students are expected to spend 30 minutes each

evening doing their reading homework.

  • In that 30 minutes, students should read for approximately 20-

25 minutes and then write a summary of what they have read.

  • Each term students are given a book to read. The books have

been chosen by the English department as we think they are good quality literature and will improve not only the students’ reading ability but also their knowledge of the world.

  • If a student finishes the assigned book before the term is up

then they read their own book and continue to write the summaries on this book.

Thursday 12th October Summary of pages 10-15

In pages 20-25 we learn about George and Lennie’s dream. George and Lennie dream about getting their own little place and living off the land. Lennie is excited about the idea of getting his own land because he wants to keep and look after

  • animals. Whereas, George is looking forward to having his
  • wn land because he wants to be his own boss.

Why we have Reading Homework

  • All students in Years 7 to 10 have had their Reading Age

assessed using an online computer program (STAR test).

  • The STAR test compares the score of the student with the

score of other students in a database to come up with a Reading Age. (The database is made up of 816,000 student responses so is considered to be a valid measure)

  • According to the results, 63% of students in Year 7 currently

have a Reading Age that is more than six months lower than their chronological age.

  • At Nova, we want all students’ Reading Ages to be at least

equal to their chronological age.

Why we have Reading Homework

  • We believe that it is vital for students to be competent readers

so that they can meet the demands of the curriculum in many

  • f their different subjects.
  • We also believe that being well-read allows students to thrive

in a literate society and enriches their lives.

  • A vast array of research has been carried out into the impact of reading.
  • Below are just three key findings in relation to the impact of reading on:

academic progress, health and well-being, and the economy: 1. There is a difference in reading performance equivalent to just over a year’s schooling between young people who never read for enjoyment and those who read for up to 30 minutes per day. 2. Reading for pleasure has been linked to a reduction in the symptoms of depression and to a reduction in the risk of developing dementia in later life. 3. In England and Northern Ireland the median hourly wage of workers with highest levels of literacy is 94% higher than for workers who have the lowest levels of literacy.

SLIDE 16

Why we have Hegarty Maths Homework

  • Numeracy is an essential life skill
  • Hegarty Maths has been designed to give students

repeated practice of key Mathematical concepts

  • It is an excellent resource as students get instant

feedback

  • This will help build students confidence, that can then be

developed to a higher level in lessons

  • Hegarty has been designed by a former Maths teacher

with years of classroom experience

  • Show you how to get the best out of Hegarty
