What does Maths look like at Swindon Village Primary School?

  • 1. We ALL start

the journey TOGETHER

  • 2. Some children

will need a little additional support along the way

  • 3. Some children, who feel confident, will be let
  • loose. They’ll be able to explore deeper into the

woods, before returning to the group to continue on with the journey.

  • 4. Children will not be

racing off ahead on a different journey.

  • 5. Children will not

be left behind alone and isolated.

What does Maths look like NOW at Swindon Village Primary School? What’s changed?

  • No longer teach in sets
  • Rapid graspers are not moved on to new content. They are given opportunities to

explore concepts at greater depth

  • Classroom set up/lay out
  • Breadth and depth rather than speedy progress
  • Recite maths mantra at the beginning of each lesson
  • Teach from carefully crafted lesson slides which follow an agreed format
  • Encourage high quality ‘maths talk’ where children are encouraged to use the correct

mathematical vocabulary

  • Children are encouraged to ask why? How do we know?
  • Use mathematical equipment
  • Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract- Do it, Draw it, Write it
  • Celebrate mistakes – Mistake of the Day
  • Discussing mathematical ideas/thinking/verbalising and reasoning
  • Thinking ‘outside the box’

Teaching from carefully crafted Lesson Slides

  • Prior learning: where does it all fit in
  • Key learning point: lesson objective
  • Teach it: Intro, Exciting hook, Modelling
  • Twist it: Simple examples
  • Twist it again: Active argument – yes/no true/false
  • Twist it some more: Misconceptions, Show me, Convince me
  • Deepen it: Probing Questions, Rich Tasks
  • Apply it: Independent or paired activities to demonstrate

understanding

  • Deepen it: Thinking ‘Out of the Box’ application within a

variety of contexts

  • Review it: Revisit key learning

Independent or paired activities which provide opportunities to display a deep understanding of the concepts being taught.

Children showing a good understanding of a mathematical concept will have the

  • pportunity to work at

a deeper level. Those children struggling to fully understand a new concept will work with the teacher.
