Teaching Elective Requirements

1. Attend 3 of 4 quarterly evening Didactic Sessions

4:45pm–6:30pm

Alternate Sessions

• Tutoring through ACE- a tutoring session can assist a particular

student's needs, such as oral presentation skills or EKG also.

• Creating five minute module focused on teaching a specific skill,

EKG or CXR point. Ideas must be submitted by September 30, 2016 for approval. (The proposal can be submitted as part of the written Teaching and Learning Plan). Modules will be submitted to the Loyola online “Box” site and will be due by the final didactic session in March of 2016.

• Bedside teaching (1-2 students at a time) of interesting findings for one

to two hours (permission from attending of patient and patients themselves required first) can incorporate some direct observation of M2 exam skills.

• Breast workshop (9 students, 3 per day)
• Fundoscopic and ENT skill sessions on Head to Toe Exam Days

– September 20 and 27th or alternate days those weeks as per facilitator

• Train the trainer session:

Students meet with Neuro Attendings ahead of time on how to best teach and assess she student on Neuro exam, and must be present for small group Neuro session to teach AND to help be examiner for the Neuro OSCE Jan 26 AND 28. (Counts for two to three small groups, ideal for a student taking a Neurology elective at that time or has an interest in Neurology.)

• Ultrasound Workshop—if you completed US elective and selected by US

faculty

• PCM1—sometimes needs help with OSCE prep

• Finally, A Major Special Project

– that is creative, innovative and involves some personal interactive group teaching and a reflection will be considered for approval by Course Directors of this teaching elective to fulfill the requirements of the elective.

Note: In general only 1-2 M4s per small group is allowed unless otherwise noted:

Lectures begin at 1:00, SSOM Rm 190 Please come! do NOT give MS2s a second lecture Small Group: Write your name and pager at each session on the board, what rotation you are on

• Go over points from lecture…not just ask if any questions
• Assigned questions for small groups up to mid-semester

break to get MS2s reading the Bate’s textbook

• Cases for boards prep, not prepared ahead of time
• Assigned Q answers, EKG answers, CXR answers

are in a folder by Les in SSOM 310

• Thaler’s “The only EKG book you’ll ever need”

8th ed But not much changes from edition to edition, so your older editions are fine

Small group attendance

• If you are on call Monday, do NOT come to PCM 2 on

Tuesday afternoon

• Ask for permission from elective or required clerkship

director to come to PCM 2

• Ask EARLY
• Don’t assume PCM 2 “trumps” your daily schedule
• CAN COME TO PCM 2 during Sub-Is – 1x/month
• Some MAY come to PCM 2 1x/month during ED
• No more than 2 MS4s per week

Welcoming atmosphere

Keep all learners engaged Adult learners need to know why they need to know Discourage one-upmanship Avoid asking impossible questions Tell them what they have been taught Educate and Inspire (Maybe entertain)

You don’t have to be an expert, you just need to ask the right questions

What are the M2s saying?

• Pay attention to everyone, esp. EKG and CXR
• May ask you to give examples of how to do a good oral

presentation

• Focus on pert +/-, what is important to say

– Emphasize making their case – (Might make a nice project—video a good and bad presentation)

– Life long learning

• Push the M2s to think

– Ex: “What would you do next?”

Required Written Components of Course

• 1. A Teaching and Learning Plan due by

September 1, 2016 2. A final reflection paper on your teaching experience and evaluation of your learning plan by the final didactic session of the academic year.

What makes a good reflection? Keep a log/notebook, it will help.

Were you effective in teaching the material ? Were you effective in leading and getting ALL students to join in? How well did you handle difficult situations? Interruptions? Unexpected situations?

• 3. What would you do differently next time?
• 4. What surprised you the most?
• 5. How did this session make you feel?
