  3. "The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer rise "The young people of today when elders enter the room. think of nothing but They contradict their parents, themselves. They have no chatter before company, gobble reverence for parents or old up dainties at the table, cross age. They are impatient of all their legs, and are tyrants over restraint. They talk as if they their teachers." alone knew everything and Socrates 469-339 BC what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for girls, they are forward, immodest and unwomanly in speech, behaviour and dress." Peter the Hermit 13 th Century AD 3

  7. How can you make a difference? • 19 months goes quickly! • Parental support is key • It doesn’t mean you have to be an expert on all subjects • You just need to be able to support your child to achieve • Your support, encouragement and interest can motivate and help your child cope with the increased demands on their time 7

  8. The Importance of Attendance • The single biggest thing you can do for your child is to send them to school every day • Expected attendance is over 96% • At 90% attendance students have a greatly reduced chance of hitting their target grades and only a 50% chance of attaining 5 grades at 9-4 • 90% is one day off per fortnight 8

  9. How else can you help? • Enhance your partnership with the school • Provide the tools for homework and revision • Show an interest in the subjects being studied • Agree the rules for study alongside social time • Provide information to support learning • Maintain the conversation • Work when set, not when due! 9

  10. Student Expectations • Go to all your lessons on time and be prepared to work • Write down your homework and do it • Keep your work organised • Read through your work regularly • Push yourself to make use of every minute • Separate rest and relaxation time from work time • Look for the small gains 10

  14. Advice from Previous Students ‘What worked well for me was making sure I understood the basics first which meant asking loads of question during class even if it meant getting it wrong. Also what I did in my revision was talk through everything I would revise so I hear it, see it and become a factual book myself telling people the information I’d revised.’ 14

  32. Even more advice! ‘ What I would do differently – I would ask for help sooner and not leave it until it is too late, so I have to spend all day everyday on my study leave revising which overall didn’t make me do any better just made me more stressed and made me feel less confident.’ 32
