- To discuss the benefits of language groups
- To discuss how to run Lift off to Language for 2’s in
your early years setting
- For you to feel confident in setting up and running
Lift off to Language for 2’s in your pre- school/nursery with the support of the Speech and Language Therapy Service
What are we expecting at 2?
- Sit and listen to simple stories with pictures.
- Enjoy pretend play with their toys, such as feeding dolly.
- Understand more simple questions and instructions. For
example 'where is your shoe?' and 'show me your nose'.
- Use 50 or more single words. These will also become
more recognisable to others.
- Start to put short sentences together with 2-3 words,
such as ‘more juice’ or ‘bye nanny’.
- Use a limited number of sounds in their words. They can
usually be understood about half of the time.
What are we expecting at 3?
- Listen to and remember simple stories with pictures.
- Now play more with other children and share things.
- Understand longer instructions, e.g. 'make teddy jump',
understand simple 'who', 'what' and 'where' questions.
- Use up to 300 words. Putting 4 or 5 words together to
make short sentences.
- Ask lots of questions.
- Use action words and simple plurals.
- Use a wider range of speech sounds, however, will still
have difficulty with more complex sounds. People that know them can mostly understand them.

How can I encourage the children to take part?
- Allow the children to come and go from the group.
- Take the lead from the children during the session.
- Encourage additional practitioners to role model the
expected behaviour.
- Try giving each child a mat or a spot to sit on.
- Children will pay attention to any visual cues you
can give, try using some simple gesture or sign as you speak with the group and use props where you can.
