So today we will look at… • All the sources of funding available, and key messages to students and their parents • Eligibility checker – various qualifying criteria for our UK, EU and Rest of the World students • Entitlement checker – once your eligible, how much funding can you access? • The Application Process – best practice messages to aid a straightforward application • Repayment Messages – helping students and parents to understand how it works • Additional Resources and Support Videos on all of the topics covered today are available on our SFE YouTube channel – all videos around 90 seconds long, and links have been added throughout the presentation

TUITION FEES A NON MEANS TESTED LOAN FOR COURSE COSTS Tuition Fees • Universities are currently allowed to charge a maximum of £9,250 per year • This figure confirmed for 2020/21 – no announcements on subsequent years • These fees go directly to the university to help them deliver courses and university facilities • Most of our applicants choose to take out the full loan • For a factsheet to share with your students, click here... Maintenance Loans • All eligible students can get some maintenance support. • The amount you can get depends on where you live and study. • You can also apply for more based on your household income • How you are assessed and paid information, click here

MAINTENANCE LOANS INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Maintenance Loan Assessments are based on :- • The income of the parent(s) that the student lives with – including step-parents or new partners living in the household • Based on taxable income for tax year ending April 2019 (the last complete tax year prior to opening up Student Finance Applications) • Students and Parents should be made aware of the Current Year Income Assessments option where income has dropped since April 2018 (redundancy, retirement) • A new guide is available for parents, explaining this process. Click here DID YOU KNOW… There were just over 11,000 Current Year Income Assessments in 2019/20 (year to date)

Mental Health Dyslexia Stress Conditions Answer : Dyslexia Of our approximate 120,000 DSA applications per year, around 35% are for dyslexia, and almost half account for students with learning difficulties or mental health conditions – not what we typically associate with disability

GRANTS FOR DEPENDANTS FOR STUDENTS WITH CARING RESPONSIBILITIES Childcare Grant: A new system for paying Childcare came in 2019 Based on 85% of actual registered/approved childcare costs, subject to a maximum of £169.31 per week for one child / £290.27 per week for two or more children Parents’ Learning Allowance: Help with course-related costs for students with dependent children, the amount received will be between £50 and £1,716 Adult Dependants’ Grant: Normally for the student’s partner or other adult financially dependent on the student where the adult’s net income is not more than £3,796 p.a. The maximum grant available is: £3,007 DID YOU KNOW… These Dependants Grants are calculated independently of each other, and the Childcare Grant is calculated on sponsor income (same as Maintenance Loan) and not on estimates as previously done before 2019. Childcare money goes directly to the Childcare Provider, and not to the student

STUDENT FINANCE 2020/21 NHSBSA MAINTENANCE GRANT - OVERVIEW From academic year 2020/21, new and continuing nursing, midwifery and many allied health students undertaking pre-registration courses at English universities will receive a £5,000 Maintenance Grant each year: • The funding will be given to all eligible new and continuing degree-level nursing, midwifery and AHP students from September 2020 • The government expects the new funding to benefit around 100,000 students every year • Students will also be able to continue to access the appropriate funding for tuition and Maintenance Loans from SLC, plus the existing NHSBSA Learning Support Fund i www.gov.uk/government/news/nursing-students-to-receive-5-000-payment-a-year www.gov.uk/government/news/paramedic-students-will-get-5000-support-payment-each-year

STUDENT FINANCE 2020/21 NHSBSA MAINTENANCE GRANT – FUNDING OVERVIEW Students will receive at least £5,000 a year, with up to £3,000 further funding available for eligible students, including for; • Specialist disciplines that struggle to recruit, including mental health • An additional childcare allowance, on top of the £1,000 already on offer • Areas of the country (TBC) which have seen a decrease in people accepted on some nursing, midwifery and allied health courses This means that some students could be eligible for up to £8,000 per year, with all eligible students getting at least £5,000 • The funding will not be means tested and will not have to be repaid

STUDENT FINANCE 2020/21 NHSBSA MAINTENANCE GRANT – COURSE SUBJECTS The full list of pre-registration subjects set to benefit from the new funding: Dietetics Occupational Therapy Dental Hygiene or Dental Therapy Operating Department Practitioner (level 5 courses) (level 5 courses) Orthoptics Orthotics and Prosthetics Physiotherapy Podiatry or Chiropody Radiography (diagnostic and therapeutic) Speech and Language Therapy Paramedicine Midwifery Nursing (adult, child, mental health, learning disability, joint nursing/social work) i This is the first time paramedic students will benefit from additional NHS funding while at university

STUDENT FINANCE 2020/21 NHSBSA MAINTENANCE GRANT – FUNDING OVERVIEW Extra payments worth up to £3,000 per academic year will be available for eligible students, and they could receive; • £1,000 towards childcare costs • £1,000 if studying in a region (list TBC) that is struggling to recruit • £1,000 if they’re a new student studying a shortage specialism* The shortage specialisms have been confirmed as: Mental Health Nursing Learning Disability Nursing Prosthetics and Orthotics Orthoptics and Podiatry Radiography (diagnostic and therapeutic) i *Important to delivering the NHS Long Term Plan www.england.nhs.uk/long-term-plan
