EQUITY BACKGROUND (HOW & WHY)
The purpose for our equity-based work is to support the identified recommendations outlined in the Academic Systems Review, Board approved Equity Plan and Destination 2021. In the spring of 2016 the Instructional Operations Team requested an Academic Systems Review as a part of continuous school improvement efforts. The goal of the review was to gain a clear analysis of where our school district was relative to teaching and learning, as well as to get guidance and feedback in areas for improvement to better meet the needs of our LSR-7 students and families. The reviewers triangulated information from review of documentation, interviews, classroom visits and surveys to arrive at sixteen findings and nine
- recommendations. The recommendations from the Academic Systems Review provided a
road map to assist with removing barriers to support our school district with achieving its vision and mission.

PURCHASING PROCESS
The District issued an RFP (Request for Proposal) on March 22, 2019. The RFP was posted on Public Purchase (e-procurement system) and the district’s purchasing website. It was also advertised for two consecutive weeks in the Lee’s Summit Journal, per state statute and Board policy. Four proposals were received, however one was deemed non-responsive and was not scored. On April 16, 2019, a committee of 11 members consisting of district teachers, principals, counselors, and administrators met to review and score the proposals. Based on the scoring
- f the committee members, two firms were brought in for interviews.
Interviews were conducted on April 29, 2019 and May 1, 2019 by the committee and a recommendation was established. The committee recommends Educational Equity Consultants from St. Louis, MO for Board approval of a one (1) year contract with the possibility of three (3) additional renewal years with a total of no more than four (4) years.

Alignment to Destination 2021 and the LSR-7 Equity Plan
12
Alignment to Destination 2021 Plan
Lee’s Summit R-7 Destination 2021 describes for all of its students:
- “The competitive advantage necessary to be successful”
- “Reflects a culture of respect and acceptance”
- “Encourages innovation and creativity”
Graduates of Lee’s Summit R-7 School District are Global Citizens, their understanding of self and others as well as the cultural nuances that exist in our world is critical to gain that “competitive edge”. A “culture of respect and acceptance” is
- ne in which no student needs to hide or protect their sense of identity and that expectation is one that must be a diligent
effort to create and sustain the attributes of empathy, understanding, and appreciation. A learning environment that “encourages innovation and creativity” is benchmarked by the authentic relationships developed between students and the adults within the building. Additionally, Destination 2021 includes student performance key measures for both elementary and secondary schools. The following key measure states: Achievement disparities between the majority student group and each subsequent subgroup at each school will be narrowed or eliminate as measured by MPI in ELA, Math, and Science. The work to diminish disparities results from greater student engagement in the learning process. Cultural sensitivity is a major “player” regarding student engagement, because it strengthens the relationship between teacher and student. Engagement is as much about what a student knows as it is about how a student feels.

Alignment to the LSR-7 Equity Plan
The LSR-7 Equity Plan is supported by the proposed plan for all to become thought partners and learners as outlined in the description of year one:
- LSR7 Board of Education
- Superintendent and Superintendent’s Leadership Team
- District/school leaders
- Instructional staff
The learning will support the integrated focus and analysis of equity into organizational policies, procedures, leadership, teaching, and learning. Professional development opportunities related to equity support the ideological work required to deeply understand the dynamics of society and schools. The proposal connects with all of the goals in the LSR-7 Equity Plan in a comprehensive manner as an outcome
- f the collective feedback from collaborative teams. Engagement of this learning supports leaders in
developing an equity lens needed to understand culturally proficient schools.
