  2. Reflections Smart city concept works. It promotes: • Economic development • Resource efficiency • Preparedness to natural disasters and emergency situations • Safety in human settlements • Health of the population • Higher quality of life

Reflections • Technologies for smart city development are available, can be integrated with each other • There is motivation for municipalities to embrace the smart cities concept - application of those technologies can bring additional revenues to cities • In the developed countries there are multiple examples of the use of smart city technologies

  4. Challenges/issues for the discussion: - A need to narrow the digital divide between economically developed countries and countries in transition, between large and smaller cities - a need in support by donors, sister cities?, a more active (but also careful) application of PPPs. - Implementation issues: - (a) availability of data, their openness, data securtiy - (b) governance, including issues of political committment, cooperation between different ministries and officies -

Smart city project in UNECE region, Middle East and Northern Africa • Developing integrated indicators for „city profiles“ • Selecting eight cities in the UNECE region, Middle East and Northern Africa as pilot areas • Prepare city profiles – conduct analysis, make recommendations • Establish organizational structures with representatives of the cities, governments and with the involvement of stakeholders (private sector, academia, NGOs)

Smart city project in the UNECE region, Middle east and Northern Africa • Develop action plans for implementing recommendations • Identify priorities for actions • Support to the implementation of priority actions • Identifying and sharing best practices • Networking, exchange of best practices
