  • Uncover multiple perspectives rather than

become entrenched in either/or thinking;

thinking skills of participants;

Take the Civility Pledge

  • 1. Seek out a variety of reliable news sources with

different perspectives in order to learn more about the forces that divide–and also unite–our country.

  • 2. Listen Respectfully to people who have views different

than my own, be mindful to avoid stereotyping and not use language that is insulting or derogatory.

  • 3. Encourage and support efforts to bring people to

different points of views together in our community to have civil and respectful conservations.

  • 4. Invite other people to join in the Initiative to Revive

Civility and get involved in helping to connect people across political divisions. www.revivecivility.org

Hold a Revive Civility Conversation

  • 1. One on One with another person: Arrange a time

to have a conversation with someone who you think has different political views than you.

  • 2. In a small group: Ask a group you are a member
  • f to have a conversation on civility at a regular

meeting.

  • 3. Hold a community conversation: Get two or more
  • rganizations to come together and host a

conversation that brings together people from several different segments of the community to listen across differences.

Hold a Revive Civility Conversation

  • 1. Training and Skills Building: Host a 1-2 hour training

for people who want to learn more about listening and

  • ther skills needed to effectively promote civility

(guide provided by NICD)

  • 2. Text, Talk and Revive Civility: Build skills that enhance

civil discourse, listening skills and tolerance of other points of view through the use of a fun and engaging text messaging platform. Popular with middle, high school and college students.

Foster Civility on Social Media

  • 1. Check for accuracy when sharing a post. Make sure the

story is true and accurate

  • 2. Avoid insults and name calling. Helpful tip; never say

anything on social media that you would not feel comfortable saying to someone in person.

  • 3. Step back. If you see something on social media that

upsets you. Do not immediately respond.

  • 4. Spread respect by sharing information about the role of

civility in promoting constructive conversations.

Members of Council can help support this initiative by making Upper Arlington a Revive Civility Community On August 27, we ask City Council to issue a Resolution of Support, leading the community in a Revive Civility Pledge through words and actions, that renews your efforts to uphold the principles of civility and maintain civil discourse in all matters.
