EVIVE CIVIL IVILIT ITY HELP ELPS
By changing our Civil Discourse, we...
- Understand and are understood by others;
- Build relationships;
- Uncover multiple perspectives rather than
become entrenched in either/or thinking;
- Collectively improve the critical and creative
thinking skills of participants;
- Move beyond taking sides and instead
working collaboratively to uncover real solutions to problems; and
- Let go of the “us versus them” mentality.
.
HOW
OW?
Take the Civility Pledge
- 1. Seek out a variety of reliable news sources with
different perspectives in order to learn more about the forces that divide–and also unite–our country.
- 2. Listen Respectfully to people who have views different
than my own, be mindful to avoid stereotyping and not use language that is insulting or derogatory.
- 3. Encourage and support efforts to bring people to
different points of views together in our community to have civil and respectful conservations.
- 4. Invite other people to join in the Initiative to Revive
Civility and get involved in helping to connect people across political divisions. www.revivecivility.org
HOW
OW?
Hold a Revive Civility Conversation
- 1. One on One with another person: Arrange a time
to have a conversation with someone who you think has different political views than you.
- 2. In a small group: Ask a group you are a member
- f to have a conversation on civility at a regular
meeting.
- 3. Hold a community conversation: Get two or more
- rganizations to come together and host a
conversation that brings together people from several different segments of the community to listen across differences.
HOW
OW?
Hold a Revive Civility Conversation
- 1. Training and Skills Building: Host a 1-2 hour training
for people who want to learn more about listening and
- ther skills needed to effectively promote civility
(guide provided by NICD)
- 2. Text, Talk and Revive Civility: Build skills that enhance
civil discourse, listening skills and tolerance of other points of view through the use of a fun and engaging text messaging platform. Popular with middle, high school and college students.
HOW
OW?
Foster Civility on Social Media
- 1. Check for accuracy when sharing a post. Make sure the
story is true and accurate
- 2. Avoid insults and name calling. Helpful tip; never say
anything on social media that you would not feel comfortable saying to someone in person.
- 3. Step back. If you see something on social media that
upsets you. Do not immediately respond.
- 4. Spread respect by sharing information about the role of
civility in promoting constructive conversations.
