Top System was born in Latina (Italy) in 1999. Driven by their passion for boats and mechanical engineering , Vincenzo with his brother Alessio Tuccio, founded their company in their family’s mechanic workshop. In 2001 after the succesful results obtained from the first trials, Vincenzo and Alessio decided to expand their business further by producing a full range of surface drive systems. In 2004 Top System company started a commercial partnership with SAIM MARINE company. It was at this point that the product begun to be appreciated and endorsed by several famous boat builders. In 2006 Top System worked for Pershing yacht on Pershing 50’ (to solve problems encountered with concurrent systems) In 2008 Top System started a new production in Tunisia, that is where our main workshop is located. In 2009 Top System produced TS 120: the biggest surface drive In 2010 Top System started supplying military naval departments In 2014 Pershing started his production with TS Drive on P70 In 2015 Pershing put TS Drives on all range of Pershing boats. Top system’s started collaborating with Pershing in 2006 because of several problems encountered with the pre-existing system
To address and solve those problems Top System developed a new custom drive named Ts75P. Another important addition project pertains Pershing 70 with model Ts85P. This model was designed according to specific Pershing yacht’s requirements. Top system differs from previously systems adopted by Pershing boats for the shape of the drive, material of construction ( stainless steel) and above all for the joint’s system which is engineered to allow the four movements to the drive. The shape of the drive is designed to optimize the flow of water on the propeller. Specifically, the directional fin, inserted in a flush mounted manner, provides a flawless, smooth surface around the propeller hub, thus insuring an unobstructed water flow before the propeller. To dispel this prejudice, in recent years the company TS DRIVE Srl, owner of the Topsystem Surface Drive brand, has established partnerships with leader realities of the electronic and naval automation sector with the objective to sharpen new technologies, which could guarantee the installation of high performance surface transmissions without sacrificing comfort and maneuverability. Thus was born the system “EASY SET” which is studied in synergy with, the leading companies in the electronic and naval automation sector XENTA and ONYX.

Top System surface drive on Pershing
The system is composed by a series of components which interact with each other for an automated control of the vessel, and to allow to maneuver the transmissions by employing only the maneuvering joystick developed by XENTA, without the coupling rod. The experience was refined after a long collaboration with Pershing Yacht through the installation of high performance propulsion systems on shipyard’s models . Such models are integrated with devices able to electronically and independently adjust the transmissions with trim and variable direction. The electronic system, developed for Pershing , employs a software which automatically adapts to the propulsions’ position depending on the boat loading conditions and on the revolutions of the engine. In this way, by intervening on both , trim and flap, the vessel achieves its highest performance. To improve the driving experience, XENTA has developed a type of helm-by-wire steering system capable of enhancing the response’s qualities and reliability of the hydraulic actuation system, with the exceptional characteristics tactile-feeling of a steering wheel mechatronics. The mechatronics applied to steering systems is the state of the art also in the automotive world of sports cars. In the semi-active version of the wheel , according to the sail conditions, is possible to control the hardness and the wheel race to adapt the steering system’s response to the vessel gait, and therefore to make the steering safe and precise. The active version is capable, thanks to the technologically advanced mechatronics system, to arouse all those rider’s sensations typical of driving a sports car. The system varies the resistance, viscosity and the inertia of the wheel running on the basis of the boat gait, so as to transfer to the pilot the maximum feeling and full control. In the active version the wheel is self-centering. The wheel goes back to the center independently whenever the driver releases it, exactly as it happens with the steering wheel of a car. The wheel goes back to the center in a controlled manner to guarantee the perfect return to the boat’s route. Once in the route, the system continues to actuate the rudders as to guarantee the maintenance of the route even in windy conditions or current which normally require the intervention of the pilot.

The maneuvering joystick XENTA, developed for the surface transmissions is a further integrated component of the system EasySet which represents a historic transition since the joystick handles the total control of both transmissions. The two rudder-drive move independently because are not joined together by any coupling rod. The Joystick allows two different modes of operation: Docking and Cruise. In the “Docking” mode maneuver, the propulsion devices are managed independently allowing the captain to concentrate on the more suitable maneuver and leaving to the system the task of defining the action of the engine and thrusters. In this manner, 360 degree rotations and translations constitute simple actions to perform. During Navigation is possible to activate the mode “Cruise” which allows to accelerate and steer the boat by using only the joystick. The software manages the drives independently in order to vary the distance between the two propellers so as to find the optimum performance point. A crucial optional of this module is the DPS ( Dinamic Position System) which commands independently the vessel keeping it in a static position in the desired point. The all System is controlled by a monitor touch-screen which is positioned in the dashboard and which can be personalized electronically with different functionalities. For instance, to ensure the safety of the guest on board of high performance vessels, this device can manage the control of the angle rudder according to the boat’s speed. On the touch- screen monitor is even possible to personalize the driving style according to the condition of the ocean. Obviously the manual commands are always available to ensure the maximum driving pleasure in the constant pursuit of maximum performance. Lastly, the software can also be upgraded with extra features to allow the visualization of the tanks levels or, to manage auxiliary controls such as handling platform, safety blocks, tender-lift, etc.

PRODUCTION & COMPONENTS
The drive coupling system is achieved by means of a special universal joint system designed by our company. The coupling system provides absolute strength and simplicity of use. Above all, it guarantees high performance, thanks to the “trimming” transmission. Another important function of the coupling system is that it supports the torsion loads of the whole equipment. (In other propulsion systems with spherical couplings, this function is carried out by the trim cylinder).

In practical applications the coupling system employs two fixing supports. These supports are connected, one to the stern of the vessel and the other to the stern tube which holds the propeller; these supports provide the required angular adjustment for the coupling ( =30°) which in turn allows the propellers’ desired degree of immersion. The supports are composed of two threaded bores, positioned at 180° into which is screwed the bush, responsible for the tightening of the sphere.

The bellows in the system have two functions: To protect the coupling from sea water by making it watertight; to contain the lubricating oil for the joints. In order to manufacture this type of bellows, research and tests were carried out so as to obtain a mixture of Nitrile rubber, which is resistant to oil, abrasion and flame.
BELLOWS AND COMPONENTS
Two new developments pertain the coupling arrangement of the trim’s tabs, and the steering control cylinders. Both, in view of their dimensions, benefit from TS spherical coupling system used on the drives for the smaller models. This solution, apart from giving greater strength to the supports, also creates a watertight passage in the hydraulic tubes. Finally, studies have been carried out to design a new protection system of the shaft seals, which has already became the “war horse” of all the Top System models. This system, is significantly effective in preventing foreign bodies from damaging the hydraulic seals.
