Th The His istory of f IB IB and IB IB in in Ontario • The International Baccalaureate was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 (50 year!) as a non-profit educational foundation • There were 2790 schools in 143 countries writing last May • More than 56% of IB students are women • 369 IB World Schools in Canada: 171 in the Diploma Programme (2016) • First Canadian School in 1974 • IB Diploma Pass Rates: World Average 78% (2018) and our schools typically are greater than the World Average • 155 Universities in Canada recognize the IB Programme (2016) Page 2

IB IB in in th the HWDSB • Two Schools offer the IB Diploma Programme: • Ancaster Secondary School • Westdale Secondary School • Students apply to the IB Program in the designated IB catchment boundary in January of their grade 10 year. Basically: on the mountain; go to Ancaster, not on the mountain: go to Westdale. (Waterdown attends Westdale) • Diploma Program offered in grades 11 and 12 Page 3

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. Students study The curriculum contains SIX subject groups and a core of three parts. concurrently:  three subjects at higher level (240 hours each)  three subjects at standard level (150 hours each)  all three parts of the core The IB Learner Profile and the core are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme. Th The Core: N Non-Classroom Components of f th the Dip iplo loma All three components must be completed by students to earn the Diploma and students can earn up to 3 Bonus Points towards their Diploma. Theory of Knowledge – TOK students DO get an OSSD credit for this course. Extended Essay – EE - University prep with a 4000 word essay. Creativity, Activity and Service – CAS Project with 7 Learning Outcomes. Page 9

OSSD and IB • University Preparation Program • Ongoing Studies are being published on the success rates of IB Students once they enter University • Internationally Written Curriculum • Students will be exposed to curriculum that connects them to a Global Education • Transferable to Many Countries and University Acceptance • Internationally recognized and widely thought of as a quality controlled and dynamic curriculum (not just for students who plan to go Out of Province for University) • Transfer Credit • Students can apply for University credit based on their results Page 10

  12. What is is specia ial about IB IB assessment? IB assessment is rigorous, criterion related, consistent and differentiating of student ability. • Diploma Programme assessment includes both final examinations and internal assessment undertaken by the teacher using IB criteria and then externally moderated by the IB • Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) • The maximum diploma score is 45 points including the 3 bonus points • Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points , complete the Core and get a 4 average in their 3 HL courses Page 12

IB IB Dip iplo loma • How can I get my IB Diploma in Grade 12? • 7 point marking scale • Pass each course (no marks of 1), average of 4 in 3 HL courses • Receive a minimum of 24 Diploma Points • Complete the TOK and Extended Essay • Complete CAS Example : Group 1 – Language 6 Group 2 - Second Language B 5 Group 3 - Individuals and Societies 7 Group 4 - Experimental Sciences 6 Group 5 - Mathematics 6 Group 6 - The Arts 5 Bonus TOK and EE (maximum 3) 3 IB Diploma Score 38

Level 5 in Math other 4U math (min. and English. (No Math 80% in these 3) and Studies) 87%+ average overall. English, Math (HL ENG4U, MCV4U, Toronto Engineering recommended, no Math MHF4U, SCH4U, SPH4U Studies), Chemistry and and another 4U course, Physics (HL preferred). 70% in each prereq. Predicted score of 30, min. of Level 4 in courses.
