Whether the pupil selects the IB or Apolytirion, they ask key questions: What subjects do I like more than others? In which subjects I do better? What activities outside of class do I like and do well? Possible careers to investigate and how to reach these? Is/Are there a country/countries I will consider? Is there a summer program to further pursue an interest? Ideally - have answers to these questions Lyceum 2ndyear / IB year 1 (Waiting a year to do the process of applying internationally leaves little time for researching appropriate choices,, arranging for testing, completing forms, visiting if possible. Etc. . . .)

slide-4
SLIDE 4

Paths to Success Many times the answers to these questions help students to decide which is the best way forward:

  • Apolytirion
  • Apolytirion and A-level exams
  • Apolytirion and Panhellenic
  • Apolytirion and Panhellenic and A-level Exams
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)

There is no “better path” Students must decide which is best for them to do their best. Above all, you want to be the best prepared for university and provide evidence of this preparation.

slide-5
SLIDE 5

Look at each academic path and ask if it is – what I want to do, will do, and will do well. Each academic path has course concentrations that link to interests/strengths. Which one is suited to you?

Each university sets its own standards. The better and more competitive the university, the higher the standards and increased number of expectations.

Example – UK - Science

  • Univ. Glasgow

IB 32 to 36 pts total HLs 6,6,5 to 6,5,5/ 2HL or SL 6 sciences / Math HL6 or SL5 Apolytirion 19-20 avg. / Panhellenic Exams are NOT accepted 2 Science A Level subjects IELTS 6.5 and no component less than 6.0

  • Univ. Edinburgh

IB 32 to 37 pts total; minimum 3 HLs at 5,5,5, and subject specific Apolytirion 19 avg with specific subject scores plus 4xPanhellenics* at least 18 (subject specific) IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 min. in each component

slide-7
SLIDE 7

Example: Psychology

  • Univ. Bath

IB 36 pts with 3 HLs 7 6 6 Apolytirion 19 avg. Panhellenics not accepted, plus 2 A-levels IELTS 7, no less than 7 in all components

  • Univ. York

IB 36 pts total to including 1 x HL science, which may include Psychology Apolytirion ‘typically require between 18 and 19.5 overall For some courses you will need to gain up to two A levels in certain subjects in IELTS 6.5 with no component less than 6.0 Locating IB requirements less complicated; specific requirements clearer and fewer – more students and UK students doing IB

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Students collect the data to know and set goals Example, Computer Science:

  • Univ. Southampton

= 38 pts / 18pts in 3 HL subjects Edinburgh Univ. = 32 to 37 pts and min. 6 5 5 in 3 HL subjects Queen Mary’s, = 32 pts and 6 5 5 in the 3 HL subjects

  • Univ. Sussex (BSc)

= “typical offer” 32-34 pts

  • Univ. of Strathclyde

= 34 pts (Maths HL 5, Computer Science recommended) These change from year to year, from university to university. What is true for Computer Science is not true for their history or biology requirements, and so forth. What is true for the UK is not true for the USA, Canada etc.

Some generalities and advice It involves research and vigilance. Go to a university website for the most up-to-date requirements Contact them if the information cannot be found. The more competitive and successful the university program the more they require (and of UK students as well). Universities trying to equate/compare UK with internationals students with IB, with Apolytirion/Panhellenic, French Bac, Swiss Matura, etc. Select, Perform, Research, Strategize – The LNAT example

The International Baccalaureate is excellent preparation https://www.ibo.org/news/news-about-the-ib/university-admissions-officers- favour-dp-over-a-levels/ University Admissions Officers asked to rate exam systems: A Levels, the IBDP, and BTEC, for ‘encouraging independent inquiry,’ ‘encouraging citizenship’ and ‘developing self-management skills.’ IBDP ranked top in 14 of 16 different factors. All agreed that being able to think and learn independently the most important element to thrive at university. The admissions officers believe DP encourages independent inquiry (95 %), compared to A Levels (48 %) Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), revealed that DP students have a 57 percent greater likelihood of attending one of the top 20 UK universities than their peers who study A Levels. Explains increasing number of UK schools dropping the A levels for the IB. Wellington example: not about the results, about the best education
