  1. Nudges for social good: Practical tips and learning from the LGA behavioural insights programme Councillor Joy Allen Portfolio Holder for Transformation, Durham County Council March 12 2019 www.local.gov.uk

  2. #1 Engage your stakeholders • Are my council senior leadership team and councillors on board with the project? • Have I formed a multi-disciplinary project team? • Is the good will and work of external partners and stakeholders required and have they been engaged? www.local.gov.uk

  3. #2 Work out your sample size • Do I have a readily available sample size or will I look to recruit residents to take part? • Have I used the power calculator to work out my sample size online? • Have I spoken to any data, research or performance officers in my council if struggling with the power calculation? www.local.gov.uk

  4. #3 Be mindful of other transformational projects • Am I planning other transformational activity in the service at the same time as carrying out the trial? • Are new systems being put in place and how will this affect my trial? • Has a new law come into force recently or is it coming soon? www.local.gov.uk

  5. #4 Be aware of procurement and restructuring • Who currently delivers the service? • Is a procured service involved in the project and/or will I be re-procuring during the lifecycle of the project? • Can I include any learnings from the project in a future service plan or specification? www.local.gov.uk

  6. #5 Ensure sufficient service capacity • Do I have a contingency plan for different eventualities? • Am I able to adopt an agile project management approach to adapt to different needs and demands? www.local.gov.uk

  7. #6 Data, data, data • Have I factored in enough time to gather evidence into my project timeline? • Have I identified the root of the problem in order to decide on an intervention? • Have I tested assumptions in the data? • Have I looked into collating both types of data – quantitative and qualitative? • Is a data sharing agreement needed and have I included this in my project plan? www.local.gov.uk

  8. #7 Assess and manage risk • Will the project require ethical clearance from any local and or national bodies? • Who will I need to apply to? How long will it take? www.local.gov.uk

  9. #8 Simplify your intervention • Are the nudges automated or do they need manual assistance or human intervention? • Am I looking to trial something manageable rather than biting off more than I can chew initially? www.local.gov.uk

  10. #9 Measure your results • How do I know if the person has received the nudge and that it is the nudge specifically that has caused the change in behaviour? • Will I carry out a 12 month review and analysis of the results and lessons learnt? www.local.gov.uk

  11. #10 Scale your intervention • Are others interested in the trial and can I keep in touch with them as it progresses? • Have I enabled another team to start their own behavioural insights intervention? • Have I contacted the LGA to help me to scale the approach nationwide? www.local.gov.uk
