MR DAVE FLEMING

  • Innovation Connections Facilitator for the Newcastle, The Greater Hunter and Central Coast

region of NSW.

  • Role is to connect local companies with the technical expertise and state-of-the-art equipment

available from publicly funded research organisations. These connections can then lead to collaborative R&D projects to help companies develop their commercial innovations with the support of the research organisation.

  • Has spent the past 13 years working in a technology transfer and research business development

role for the University of Newcastle through the R&D company Newcastle Innovation Ltd.

  • Also has worked in the private sector, undertaking business development and business

management roles for multinational and local companies.

Innovation Connections Programme – 2 parts

  • Innovation Connections Facilitation (free) – the focus is to

help SMEs collaborate with the research sector to develop new ideas with commercial potential

  • Innovation Connections Grants (matching funding)- Provides

2 x $50k of matched funding for SME’s to engage with researchers and 1 x $30k funding for Graduate Placement (non-competitive and originally devised as a precursor to potential ARC linkage grant applications)

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Grant Funding available under IC

CSIRO SME Connect 12 |

  • Researcher Placement: utilise the expertise and resources of a

researcher to work on an innovation project for you (up to $50,000 available to support an engagement);

  • Business Researcher Placement: funding to support salary costs

for your employee(s) to work with a Publicly Funded Research Organisation on your innovation project (up to $50,000 available to support your employee(s) time on the project);

  • Graduate Placement: the employment of a graduate or post

graduate into the Company to undertake a specific Innovation Connections project collaboratively with a Publicly Funded Research Organisation (up to a maximum of $30,000).

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Innovation Connections – Key Points

  • Minimum of 1.5 days per week per researcher involved in

the IC Project

  • Up to 3 researchers can be involved in any one project
  • Each Project (up to 2) has a maximum Ausindustry matched

funding value of $50,000

  • Each Project has a maximum time limit of 1 year
  • The grant is non-competitive and only requires company

eligibility and project eligibility

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Innovation Connections – Key Points

  • Grant application and approval is an easy, web-based process

with minimal effort required from research organisations or the company in order to proceed (can take around 4 – 8 weeks to start a project)

  • Minimum legal review is required by the research organisation

(UoN has a template agreement already approved)

  • IP arrangements are handled in a pragmatic way to assist both

researchers and companies achieve what they need from the Project

  • End of project reporting is a simple templated two page “tick

box” requirement for the researcher and the company to complete.

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Innovation Connections – Eligible Costs

Eligible Costs for the R&D project:

  • Direct salary costs and on-costs for an existing or new

researcher

  • Student allowance
  • Travel (for specific project related travel only)
  • Facility Hire (including personnel to run the facility)
  • Research organisation overhead costs (up to a max of 30%
  • f the total project cost)

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CRAIG WHEELER

School of Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment

Research Expertise My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor

  • systems. The importance of belt conveying systems to the mining and minerals processing industries is
  • immense. In a global sense, hundreds of billions of tonnes of bulk materials are transported by belt conveyors

each year to transport bulk materials, such as coal, iron ore, bauxite and grain, over distances ranging from several metres to tens of kilometres.

DOCTOR DAVID BRADNEY

School of Engineering [Mechanical Engineering] Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment

  • Completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering - focused on

simulation and measured performance of wind turbines in turbulent environments.

  • Expertise lies in simulation using Finite Element modelling

(FEA), computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Mechanical design.

  • PhD evolved extensive experimental work with numerous

data accusation systems.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

How I got involved w ith Innovation connections:

  • At the completion of my PhD there was the opportunity to

be involved in an Innovation Connection project with Melvelle Equipment Corporation to design a new ‘narrow rail tensor’

slide-28
SLIDE 28
  • Completing a PhD doesn’t allow for much opportunity to

think beyond the PhD

  • Being involved with an Innovation Connections project

allowed me time to transition to ‘life after the PhD’.

What I got out of Innovation Connections

slide-29
SLIDE 29

What I got out of Innovation Connections

  • An opportunity to utilise my skills in a challenging and

interesting industrial project.

  • Provided an excellent pathway to transition from my PhD.
  • Provided an opportunity to work on the project half the time,

allowing me to lecture (in Mechanical Design), and write research papers from my PhD during the remaining time.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

What I got out of Innovation Connections

  • I was lecturing in courses in Mechanical Design and

Advanced Computer aided engineering – both of which tied in well with Innovations Connection project

  • Many of the topics of was teaching, I was also applying in

parallel with the Innovations Connections project, which allowed me to provide greater depth to my teaching.

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Where am I now

  • I enjoyed re-engaging with industry and am now working

for TUNRA Bulk Solids consulting directly with Industry.

  • The skills developed through the Innovation Connections

project provided a great stepping stone to my current working environment.
