  1. This project is funded by The European Union ENHANCED COMPETITIVENESS OF TAJIK AGRIBUSINESS PROJECT (ECTAP) Improving Cattle Breed and Productivity “Investment support for improved productivity and income” 1

  2. This project is funded by The European Union Bovine Cattle and Small Ruminants in Tajikistan  Breeding farms, dehkan farms, commercial farming enterprises and smallholders are involved in bovine cattle and small ruminant breeding in Tajikistan.  ECTAP partner financial institutions – Eskhata Bank CJSC, Arvand MFI and Imon MFI – offer loans and 20% grants on loan amount to farmers and individuals willing to engage in cattle breeding. 2

  3. This project is funded by The European Union Cattle Breeds The following breeds of bovine stock are kept in Tajikistan: Black-and-white Charolaise Schwyz Aberdeen Angus Holstein Kalmyk Simmental Kazakh White-headed

  4. This project is funded by The European Union Black-and-white breed  Breed is used for meat and milk production. Productivity during lactation period : - 1 st calf heifer – up to 2,800 kg; - 2 nd calf heifer – up to 3,000 kg; - 3 rd calf heifer – up to 3,500 kg. Meat Yield: - 57-60% of live weight per 1 adult animal.

  5. This project is funded by The European Union Schwyz Cattle  Tajik variety of Schwyz breed was bred in 1984 by mating local Zebu breed with Schwyz bulls.  It is a meat and milk breed. Meat and milk production Average milk yield per cow head during lactation period is - 1 st calf heifer – up to 2,600 kg; - 2 nd calf heifer – up to 2,800 kg; - 3 rd calf heifer – up to 3,000 kg. Meat yield per head of adult cattle is 55-57% of live weight.

  6. This project is funded by The European Union Holstein Cattle - live weight of middle-age cows is 650 kg, - live weight of adult cows 750 kg, - live weight of bulls is up to 1,000 kg, - Milk production per lactation period is up to 8.5 thousand liters with 3.0-3.2 % fat content.

  7. This project is funded by The European Union Simmental Cattle Lactation period lasts for 305 days. Milk yield from first calf cows of this breed is up to 6,500 kg, The 2 nd calf cows yield more than 7,000 kg of milk with a fat content of not less than 3.8%. Adult bulls weigh 500-850 kg, and sometimes up to 1,000 kg. Well raised bulls have meat yields of up to 65%.

  8. This project is funded by The European Union Charolaise Charolaise is a meat breed with its bulls weighing 1,000-1,200 kg and sometimes up to 1,500 kg, and cows weighing 700-800 kg sometimes up to 1,150 kg. Meat yield is 58-60%. Average daily weight gain is around 1,000 -1,200 g with 60-65% meat yield.

  9. This project is funded by The European Union Aberdeen Angus Live weight is 450-500 kg for cows and 700- 800 kg for bulls. Net meat yield after butchery is 60-65%.

  10. This project is funded by The European Union Kazakh White-headed  Live weight of cows 500-550 kg,  Live weight of bulls 800-950 kg.  Average annual milk yield 1,200-1,500 kg.  Milk fat content 3.8-4.0%.  Meat yield 53-55%.

  11. This project is funded by The European Union Small Ruminant Breeds The following breeds of small ruminants are kept in Tajikistan: Sheep: Goat: Hissar Tajik Wooly Local Soviet Wooly Tajik Local Karakul

  12. This project is funded by The European Union Hissar Breed  Hissar sheep is kept in Hissar, Tursunzoda, Vahdat, Faizabad, Farkhar, Vose, Varzob, Rudaki districts and in some areas of Sogd region .  Hissar breed belongs to fat-tailed group of fat and meat variety. Live weight of male sheep:  at birth 5.5-6.5 kg;  4-5 months 45-50 kg;  18 months 80-90 kg;  inseminating males 120-140 kg. Fat tail weight of male sheep 18-25 kg;  Weight gain per day is 300-350 g. Meat yield is up to 65% and 30% of it is tail fat.

  13. This project is funded by The European Union Advantages of Breed Livestock 1. Increased yield and higher quality of meat and milk. 2. Higher fat and protein content in milk. 4. Improved pasture management due to lower number of local livestock. 5. Lower production cost of animal products. 6. Lower labor input. 7. Increased farmer income.
