OVERVIEW

Established by the McKay family in 1985, Abbey Vale is a 31 hectare property in the Yallingup Hills area of Margaret River. The vineyards were sold to the current

  • wners in 2001 remaining family owned with a driving

commitment to quality. Historically, Abbey Vale was renowned for creating fantastic Margaret River Cabernets and Semillon Sauvignon blends and in February 2016, Abbey Vale Wines was re-launched by Julian Langworthy (Winemaker) and brothers John Fogarty (Viticulturist) and Mark Fogarty (Finance & Management) with the aim of re-establishing this iconic name with an emphasis on making delicious, yet afgordable, Margaret River wines that over-deliver on value. Abbey Vale Wines will continue to showcase what it feels is best about the Yallingup sub-region of the greater Margaret River Wine Region, focussing on traditional Margaret River hero varieties and blends. Commencing with a Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon in 2016, Abbey Vale has plans to extend this range further, to include a fmagship range of wines.

ESTATE

Located in the Yallingup sub-region of Margaret River, the Abbey Vale vineyard is on the receiving end of cooling maritime breezes from both the north and the west – unique to the northern tip of the region. Of equal importance is the elevation of the Abbey Vale property, which sits 129m above sea level making it one of the highest altitude vineyards in the region. This allows Abbey Vale wines to achieve full ripeness across all varieties without jammy fruit characters or over extractive wines. The original vineyards were planted in 1985 and represents 17 hectares under vine of the 31 hectare

  • property. From these original plantings, the highest

quality fruit comes from blocks of Chardonnay, Semillon, Malbec and particularly the Cabernet Sauvignon. The property itself also has a natural amphitheatre and a large ground-fed freshwater dam which is able to sustain any water needs of the vineyard. The Abbey Vale Wines cellar door is perfectly situated on the property, sitting amongst the vineyard, while overlooking the large dam which provides our cellar door visitors with one of the most sublime views in the region.

WINEMAKER

JULIAN LANGWORTHY

Julian is an experienced winemaker who has held senior roles throughout Australia including at Knappstein Winery and Brewery (Clare Valley), Wynn’s Estate (Coonawarra), Wolf Blass (Barossa) as well as undertaking vintages in the south of France. While Julian now holds the esteemed position of Group Chief Winemaker at the highly awarded Deep Woods Estate in Margaret River, the temptation to take on the role as winemaker for the Abbey Vale Wines was too great for Julian to resist. It allows him to work alongside two mates while creating a new and exciting Margaret River brand from the highly renowned Abbey Vale vineyard. Julian has received acclaim during his career to date, recently as a fjnalist in the Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year 2015 and previously as a fjnalist in the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial. Julian loves all things Cabernet and since his commencement at Deep Woods Estate, the winery has won over 15 trophies and in excess of 50 gold medals in Julian’s fjrst four vintages which was in no small part due to his work with the ‘King of Reds’, Cabernet Sauvignon.

REGION: MARGARET RIVER

OVERVIEW / ESTATE / WINEMAKER / REGION / RANGE / WINES / CONTACT

For many UK consumers Margaret River IS Western

  • Australia. The Swan District may produce most of the

wine and there may be many other top quality regions but it is still Margaret River, with all its now famous names, that has caught the consumers and UK trade’s attention. All this fame and undeniable quality comes at a cost of

  • course. The wines are the state’s most expensive but still

signifjcantly better value than the top wines produced in the east of the country e.g. Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale. Margaret River’s position is particularly enviable from a wine growing point of view. It is situated on a square peninsular surrounded on three sides by the Indian

  • Ocean. This oceanic infmuence keeps the warm and dry

summers from getting too hot while allowing the grapes to fully ripen in all but the worst years. In terms of grape varieties Margaret River is best known for its superlative Cabernet Sauvignon. Not unlike that

  • ther west facing coastal region Bordeaux, it produces

Cabernets of great fjnesse and concentration on the free draining gravelly soils that pepper the region. The

  • ther grapes of Bordeaux also fmourish and Merlot/

Cabernet blends are common with Malbec and Petit Verdot plantings also on the increase. Further re- enforcing this Bordelaise link, the fastest growing variety in terms of plantings is Semillon. There are exceptional single varietals Semillons being produced but it is more commonly being blended with Sauvignon Blanc and as a white wine style is one of the most popular in Australia.

Winemaker Vintage Notes

The 2015 vintage, whilst commencing very early, was extremely good for aromatic grape varieties with amazing natural acidity present in the

  • juices. This natural acidity enabled the production of wines of excellent

varietal purity and freshness. Clean, cold ferments were integral in harnessing the brightness and vibrancy of both varieties, while extended lees contact on select parcels provides texture and depth.

The 2014 harvest in Margaret River was from our perspective a perfect Cabernet season. Relatively mild day time temperatures and cool nights prevailed throughout late February and.
