Resiliency • Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve What is SEL? positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. (CASEL)

What does (SEL) Digital Gender- Specific Circles Offer? • Listen rather than tell, thus establishing norms of positivity in the space • Set the tone to increase their emotional literacy choices and then allow them to establish what words will be used • Ask open-ended questions • Express empathy through reflective listening by using a method of clarifying communication • Reiterate what was stated • Utilize the LOVE principle LOVE PRINCIPLE Listen Observe Validate Empower LISTEN (Create a Safe Keeper Space) Listen • Listen with your ears, eyes and heart! Show them you are with them throughout this healing process. Enter • Enter their world. Set • Set the rules, set the tone and lead by example!

  5. OBSERVE (Connectedness) • Observe the nonverbal forms of communication, be aware of facial expressions, body language, and the manner they respond to each other. Observe who sits next to who, who is the leader, the follower. Their attitudes towards each other can offer a huge tell- tale or red flags regarding what’s going on with individuals within the circle • Observe our trauma responses –Fight, Flight or Free and how they identify with it. Validate (Hope) • Acknowledge their names, their voices, their thoughts and ask meaningful questions that reflect their feelings Affirmations, goals & dreams Educate & Empower • Challenge them to be in touch with self, with school/each other, home and community toempower them to realize their potential, purpose and mission in life! • Empower them to pick up their journals, write out their feelings and express what it feels like to define who they are! • Simply allow them to walk out into the world empowered to Define their Digital world inside and out!

  7. Self-Awareness Starts with a mind-shift to see your self in a positive light daily! Our girls are hearing too many negative words at home, school and in the media to define themselves. This increases relational aggression due to informational overload! 81% of the girls will suffer from emotional & mental tantrums. Self- Awareness~ Being able to define your feelings • We must see positive reflections of ourselves in the mirror, radio, television, social media, books and games!   9. BREATHE Breathe !!! Sit comfortably or lie down. Place one hand on your stomach and one hand on your chest. Breathe in slowly through your nose. Feel your stomach expand as you inhale. If you are breathing from the stomach, the hand on your chest shouldn’t move. Focus on filling up your lower lungs with air. Slowly exhale, releasing all the air out through your mouth. Use your hand to feel your stomach fall as you exhale. Practice breathing four to six breaths per minute Repeat this up to 10 times. Increases your levels of resiliency Decreases your levels of stress Benefits of Mindfulness Increase a sense of calm and mental balance Meditation Connects us with a sense of self, as we connect with others Affirm & Define your Vision for the day!!!!

  11. Self-Management allows them to cope when things don’t go as planned to self-regulate, control those impulses to respond negatively, pause and reflect! Journaling or incorporating Let it Go and Let it flow! I Define ME Journal Relationship Skills ability to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts constructively, resist negative social pressures and seek help when needed.

Social Media Negativity What are the Benefits of Positive Media? • Positive use of the media, the use of literature and media to assist girls in overcoming emotional turmoil related to real life problems. • to build self esteem, self- awareness and body image. • Decrease negative written communication, promoting creative content that has a message. Responsible Decision-Making the ability to make ethical choices about personal behavior.

Define Your Voice Outcomes of SEL • Improved attitudes about self and others, • Increased pro-social behavior, • Lower levels of problem behaviors and emotional distress, and • Improved academic performance (Catalano et al., 2002; Greenberg et al., 2003; Zins et al., 2004). *Mentor- led circles/groups of ten or less, diverse and held in a comfortable emotional safe space *Establish specific rules/boundaries (Love Principle) *Begin circles with manifesto/pledge/Affirmations Gender-Specific Spaces *Online University (Safe Space) *Interactive/ Self- pacing Activities *Increasing Emotional Intelligence
