The Austrian Nano Initiative ...
is a comprehensive funding programme for nanoscale sciences and nanotechnologies (NANO) in Austria budget: 35 M € for the years 2004-2006 – 2008+(mid-longterm) Is based on 3 pillars: research funding – networking – education & training Forms an umbrella over support measures on the national and regional levels Is carried by several Ministries, federal states and funding agencies Is coordinated strategically by the BMVIT and on the
- perative level by FFG

Programme action lines (2)
Research and Technology Development Project clusters
Building and strengthening research, technology and cooperation competence by funding strategically decisive RTD project clusters. These may range from basic research to technology development and should achieve substantial progress in technology and know- how for science and enterprises
Networks and Confidence Building
Expanding and managing the networking of the Austrian players nationally and internationally and with other networks
03.11.05 BMVIT Abt. III/I5 6
Programme action lines (3)
Training and education
Strengthening the human resources required for qualitative and quantitative growth by developing, funding and implementing suitable education and training measures for students, researchers and staff members of enterprises
Accompanying measures
Developing, preparing and buying specialist studies, market and feasibility studies, strategic concepts. Technology foresight studies and analyses as well as building up a national strategic accompanying research programme (e.g. risk research)

Requirements for an RTD project cluster:
minimum of 1 RTD project focussing on basic research and at least 1 RTD project focussing on industrial research and technology development total of at least 4 RTD projects minimum number of all partners amounts to at least 3 enterprises and at least 3 R&D organisation minimum of 15% of the overall RTD project cluster has to be borne by enterprises
evaluation procedure:
Expert Opinion in writing hearings Jury meeting and funding recommendation legally binding funding decision by the BMVIT

The first five Austrian NANO project clusters are (1):
NADINE (“Nano Diamond network”)
unites seven projects and fifteen partners. The material diamond is defined due to its characteristics as outstanding material for biotechnological applications The main topics are cell engineering, nano-biosensors, MEMS and NEMS. The Competence Centre Medicine in Tyrol (KMT) coordinates the project cluster together with the company Rho-BeSt coating. .

The first five Austrian NANO project clusters are (2):
NANO-HEALTH “Nanostructured Material for Drug Targeting, Release and Imaging”
coordinated by Joanneum research focuses on the development of new therapy solutions for diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer applying innovative nano-particles.
ISOTEC “Integrated Organic Sensor and Optoelectronics Technologies”
lead by Joanneum resaerch and the University of Technology in Graz will open new opportunities in the combination of new organic semi- conductors as well as structuring and production methods applicable for sensors and optoelectronics.

The first five Austrian NANO project clusters are (3):
NANOCOAT “Development of Nanostuctured Coatings for the Design of Multifunctional Surfaces”
coordinated by the Materials Competence Centre in Leoben (MCL) and focuses
- n the development of concepts for suitable manufacture technologies to design
multi-functional surfaces and interfaces
NSI "Nanostructured Surfaces and Interfaces"
lead by the NanoScience & Technology Centre in Linz (NSTL). The main topics are biocompatible nano-structures, polymers and nanocomposites as well as metal surfaces and interfaces
